It happened to me many times---cashiers making mistakes (deliberate or not) in punching the calculator and give you the wrong figure. I would usually borrow their calculator and punch the numbers myself and end up with the right amount to be paid which is way less than what the cashier said. Oftentimes, shortchanging happens even in big supermarkets, drive-thrus(when you are in a hurry) etc. One time I was supposed to receive 45o php for my change. The cashier loudly counted the money and loudly proclaimed the amount 45o. Others would have left right away but I counted the change in front of her and, voila, it was 100 php short! So I told the lady, "How come you counted 450 when this is only 350----lacking 100! " She of course apologized and gave me the correct amount.

And countless of other instances----it is rampant. Count your change/money before leaving the counter.

I've been rather fortunate. I have been given back more than I should have more times than I have been short changed. Yes, I always give them back the money, otherwise it comes out of their check.

On a side note, check your bill. A few times I was charged for more than was ordered. In many other instances I was not charged for the amount that was ordered. I also inform them of either one and make sure the right amount is paid.

    Hi Glenda:
I usually check the bill in my head rounding off, and if it's close, i accept the total. For change i calculate it in my head exactly, then watch them count it out or count it in the basket. Exercise da brain.. I've been undercharged more than overcharged, they usually forget the second coffee or the baked goods "to go." Had one waitress in the states, add up the bill to $32, when it should have been $22, that's the worst. Actually if i don't think i've been overcharged more than once in 3 yrs....

The only time I run up a tab is at bars. It's pretty hard to look through the receipts when drunk but I usually give it my best go if it gets up around P1k. The receipts usually end up spinning before I get to the last receipt so I just give up, say it looks good and pay whatever the amount was. It's rather pointless, as I've never caught an overcharge (or remember catching one), but I think at least acting like I am willing to check the bill may deter them from adding extra on to it...or they have figured out once I hit x number of drinks they can add a few extra drinks and I won't catch it.

You have to be extra careful at bars, especially after a drink or two, you'd probably not see the numbers properly.

No ma'am. It takes quite a few more than "a drink or two" for my multiplication skills to fail me and the girls know that. I can multiply P55 around 6 times while drinking. Lol

This country is polluted with thieves, but a lot of them are not very good at it. I was drinking at a bar, paid my bill which was for the exact number of drinks I had consumed, when I counted my pesos I was short changed I brought it to the attention of the waitress who immediately gave me a 100 peso note with a sorry sir. NOW HOW DID SHE KNOW THAT SHE OWED ME 100 pesos when I did not tell her how much I was short. Me thinks not to smart.
