well, Sir Warden, you really prove me wrong. I seem to remember the "left is right" - thingy a few weeks back at the Boulevard, where a guy came out of Bogarts trying to get into the right door of the car wondering if somebody stole the steering wheel... wonder if he was a Brit :P

@ Balustre: I am sure there must some hiding in Dumaguete. I read a bit on the website, but I am lazy and it is too much to read. In general it sounds interesting. Keep me posted

With due respect, there are two different things in this thread. One is the British MC Toastmaster who participates in formal rituals; while the Toastmaster Club, that I am referring to is plainly explained in the website of Toastmasters International based in California. Kindly check this site again . Thank you.

Yes, you're very right of course. However, the thread split in two because there are various interpretations and understandings of the title Toastmaster. That's why a clarification and explanation of the UK understanding of the role was given. There is no doubt that your version is quite different and anyone reading the thread from the start would clearly understand that too.

I hope that you can make some progress with your version, because it sounds intriguing and could be very beneficial.

Ouch !!! I vaguely remember that incident too. It seems that the poor chap not only considered that someone might have irresponsibly swapped sides with the aiming mechanism of the vehicle, he also considered that he might actually be in the wrong car!!! However, all became clear when it was taken in to account that he had been in the company of a very plausible German :D:D

Balustre, not to provide a negative response but if a person was working in a professional environment where he gave presentations to customers or his management, or if one was in politics, I agree the Toastmasters could be beneficial. However, here in Dgte with mostly retirees and day time beer drinkers it is hard to picture the value unless one was to try and to a takeover of the McDo Breakfast Club leadership or the Sans Rival Lunch Club. Or in my case giving a speech to my wife's relatives who don't speak or understand English. Still, it will be interesting to see if you get some members to sign up.

I absolutely disagree with that. I know plenty of people who should be interested in it and surely benefit from that. starting from local businessmen/women, attorneys in Dumaguete to thousands of young people trying to get a foot with their business onto the ground.

I rarely seen any half way proper presentation/speech anywhere around here, no matter which level we are talking about. From simple speeches on weddings to sales-talks for houses.

A year or so back I needed an attorney and was going to a recommended one. I saw him and recognized him from another occasion before (no it was not your wedding  ). as soon as I saw him I was sure I will NOT take him. If he talks that way in front of a judge, I will lose the case to 99.9%, even I am 100% right.

    Another example:
Most of the management performances of the foreign resorts here are p*ss poor. They are "dive-instructors in a cool place" but have no clue about business talk.

Sitting nice at the bar with your guests having fun makes you a friendly host, but a horrible manager.

Sitting nice at the bar, having fun and selling a mask, a continuing education course and a land-based trip for the day without diving makes you a nice guy, a successful salesman and improves your income as well as the value your guests get out of their holiday.

Even this salestalk/presentation does not happen in an "official environment" it is still a speech/presentation (call it what you want), where poor performance makes you lose that game.

I did a few public speech courses back in Germany and truly got a lot out of them. As I don't make compromises with my appearance and attitude my presentation and speeches needed to be way stronger than those "black-tie" guys betting for the same project.

We had a huge BOSCH project for anniversary celebrations all over Europe We were competing with 5 other companies and the 4th company to present our ideas. pretty unknown in the event-management-genre The first three started all:
"Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Thanks for giving us the chance to .... bla bla bla" followed by 20 minute speech and basically reading a powerpoint word-by-word. The committee basically felt asleep after the first 5 minutes

We started like : Good morning guys, we don't wanna bore you for 20 minutes to tell you what you've seen already in hundreds of celebrations, How about we let your building go up in flames... we got their attention right away, kept the presentation on max 10 minutes. Free speech, hand-outs, NO word-by-word powerpoints.

Sure it was different but guess who got the deal... (which is basically one of the reasons why I could move to the Philippines 9 years ago...)

As this board is read by thousands of non-members, I do believe there might be quite some interest in it, well if they overcome the local laziness and typical "nah, i have the right family name and don't need that" attitude.
