Yes, that was entertaining wasn't it. ... It's like Fox News this forum! :D

No, I'm not in DMGT. I'm at home watching the cricket. Hope to go to the 3rd test. I will be back in DMGT probably Feb, but def. end of May.

And yourself Lofty, do you live there? Where you from?

I'm from Auckland originally. I worked in manila in the 80's and married a girl from Sibulan in 1986. We live in Perth and have 2 kids at high school here. We are hoping to start building our retirement house at sibulan next christmas.

Sibulan - isn't that the dive site, I mean resort area, to the north of DMGT?

Is it quite clean there? Must be quite a difficult prospect if you have kids at high school in Aus.

You a Force fan? What you think of their chances this time in S14? ... Or is it the Blues? I'm for the Sharks. The last minute of the last game of last year spoilt the whole season! :(

Zambezi I'm a Blues man but it's great to have the Force here so I get to see some live games. Sharks were the best team all year and were unlucky in the final.

Sibulan is about 7-8km north of Dumaguete. I don't know anything about diving (apart from the muff variety) but the locals are great, I have some good drinking mates there, a nice golf course nearby and it's close enough to Dumaguete for shopping etc. It will be 3-4 years before we can leave the kids in our house here and retire there.

Hey Jellyfish...apologies for wandering off the topic. Where are you from ?

Once again, this thread is being taken on a tangent. We were discussing the begging. I brought up a suggestion about giving out slips of paper for kids to take back to their parents who send them out to beg. I was hoping for feedback.

Richard, do you have experience in other countries or cities with that suggestion or is it a completely new idea ?

It's a totally new idea I had during my stay in Dumaguete two weeks ago. I've experienced it in other countries, too, but the idea never came to me until I started reading this thread, then visited Dumaguete for the first time in two years. I was never swamped with them before like now. Of course, it was Christmas time, though. Of course, Manila is much worse. Kids there will sometimes get belligerent.

But the idea was to make some slips of paper on a computer (so you could duplicate them) or copy machine, then give them to the kids who are begging. Not knowing what they were, they would give them to their parents. Of course, it would be short-lived, but at least it would be a way of expressing our displeasure to the parents. The slips would just say something to the effect that we will give to them, but not to their kids because the kids should be in school or playing, not doing their dirty work for them.

I had even pondered something more involved, but came to the conclusion that it would never work. Let me explain. I thought of involving the government perhaps, so they could print some sort of coupons using their mint that would be harder to counterfeit. It would be a note for some amount of money that they could only redeem at a place of worship of some sort that participated in the program. If they went there to redeem it, they would get money in exchange for counseling about the problem. The note could then be redeemed by the place of worship for more than they paid for it. That would make it worth their while. The coupons could be purchased again by individuals who wanted to give them out. It would be a cycle for the coupons, but it would be a way to get to those people. The problem I see is that it would be too open to scamming.

Something has to be done. This is child abuse plain and simple.

Most of the Badjaw (I think this was posted previously) come in family groups from Mindanao. They change clothes when they get here to the rags you see them in. It is a scam run by a cartel, similar to the European Gypsys. Changing the scheme is not likely. However, the "local" children if there are some might benefit from such an idea.
You can also bet that if the city government did not want the badjaw here they would be gone. There are many levels of acceptance here.

When I first came to Dumaguete, I was sitting in Jolly Bee eating a hamburger, a young boy with a well practiced look of pity was staring through the window at us eating. My girlfriend walked outside and offered some food to the youngster, it was flattly refused, he wanted Pesos.

I'm looking for ideas. Let's discuss what can be done about the problem. We've got children's well-being at stake. Let's not just copmplain about it, let's discuss a solution. Come on, put on the thinking cap.
