An interesting comment. I have ridden without the helmet plenty. I have also had an accident, luckily my head did not smack the pavement. That is why I would prefer to wear a helmet now.

The westerners are only posting their opinions. The law is a Filipino law it is not the westerners telling you what to do. It remains to be seen how this will play out.

As a matter of fact, this law and fines are existing since a few years already.

In the "fines-catalog from 2008" it was 750 Peso for "No helmet when driving or riding a motorcycle" that very obviously includes everybody on a bike.

There is absolute no discussion about the benefits of a helmet.

Having said that, before collecting money for "no helmet" and forcing people to buy useless plastic-pots there are a lot of other issues which cost much more lifes.

It would make more sense to enforce safety by pulling all out which:

    have no backmirrors
    have no working lights
have inappropriate lights (like tiny blue blinking LEDs)
    txting while driving
    exceeding max. capacity

    just to mention a few...

Somehow it still sounds like the thread we had 2 years ago about the same topic...

Yes, all of those cost more lives than no helmet. I guess maybe the thought process is that maybe the helmet will save the life of the accident caused by one of the above. Sort of like putting a glove on the hand but then stick the hand into the wood chipper.

    Note the word "revisited".

Saw a first today, was standing on the side of airport road, waiting for the rain that had just started to stop, a young lady on a bike was riding towards me when the drops must have started hitting her, she casually, without stopping, opened an umbrella with her left hand, held it up to keep the rain off, and continued on down the road driving one handed.
Would like to have seen her light a cigarette at the same time ..

I doubt that if she was wearing a helmet, she would have been able to do it.

    Case Closed

By the way, can anyone recommend a place to buy a decent helmet, not a plastic eggshell??
(One that sells pink and sky blue ones, kids sizes .. you get my drift .. Got to be the right color if one is to make the ladies of the family wear them .. )

This would be a very poor choice in time to buy a helmet, as it may or more likely may NOT pass the new requirements going into effect in September. Only buy one if it has the ICC or BPS sticker, as those are the only ones that will be acceptable under the new law. If you DO happen to find such a helmet, please let everyone know where and how much.
