JSS, well said, who are we to tell anyone to p*ss off or go back to where they are from???!!! For me, every one is welcome to visit and stay long term in the phils as long as they are not a threat to the country. Lets be deplomatic and open-minded in every discussions arise. I am a foreigner /"minority" as they call it in the UK, and couldn't bear the thought that someone will tell me to go back where I am from...Simple as that...

I will soon be leaving to live in tagaytay, but I will remember dumaguete for the people, very nice kind people, as regards change I am all for it if it improves the living standards of the local people, everyone should have a decent standard of living, still grinding poverty here, to deny change as a visitor because you like a quaint feel to the place is selfish and wrong

what you are saying about just being a visitor is correct which is unfortjnate as a Filippino can come to england and enjoy all the rights of a local.
its a pity the same is not granted for us foreigners.
still i don't mind too much its the beauitfiul filipino environment i care for
and in todays global voillage its not right to say what land or cou ntry belongs to who
we are all born on this planet and should all be able to have a say in what
is plundered in the name of deveopment

I'm glad to hear there's not so much begging anymore. There was a time that beggars would bother everyone outside of Jollibee. I didn't mind giving out coins and small amounts, but the moment I would give to one person I would suddenly be surrounded by a deluge of beggars. And if you didn't give them anything they would curse you and say rotten things. I wish the Philippines was more like Dubai in the way that nationals here never have to worry about medicare because it's free for them. That's why you never see any homeless people here. There are poor people here, but never beggars and never homeless. I wish that the Philippine government could set aside money for healthcare for their people, and not give in to corruption for once, just on that matter.

Yes caymimi. That's what I remember also, my experiences around Jollibee. But it's not like that now. A good sign that money is getting into the local economy.

I also notice more cars, a lot more cars!

Dumaguete will be runied by its own success

Please dont construe this as a hatchet job on Dumaguete (I do love it here REALLY) but has anyone taken a good look at what is happening here. Have you noticed the growing traffic situation or how about all those nice buses and trucks honking their ear blasting horns all the way down the scenic rizal waterfront blvd. That avenue should be the signature place of this town and it obviously isn't being treated this way NEWSFLASH, its going to get far worse and this place isn't even in the realm of reality to be prepared for it. The road system is horrid and once Robinsons gets built, good luck to anyone traveling south. An lets not even think about an SM and what that will do. Oh and what about all the huge retiirement developments coming courtesy of Ayala and friends over the next 10 years. I mean it takes this city 3 months to build a 100 meter section of road. Someting that would take 3 days back in the 1st world. If you want to see something done about all this I might suggest you get your wives and GF to start talking to the Mayors office and see what is on the horizon to salvage this nighmarish scenario that is coming to life more and more each day.

    Hi, i'm new here.
I nver knew there is a lot going on there. I'm from dumaguete but i am currently studying in manila. it would b nice to have the city developed but hopefully it won't go too far just like what's happening here in Manila. it would be nice to have developments following the traditional filipino architecture so that we could at least retain that rustic atmosphere.

    Yes Philippinediver.

You can build a bridge over the Misissipi in the first world , nowing already that it is rotten for 17 years and than be supprised when it callaps and a lot of people died.
Then you have a president who is saying how bad everyting is for the victems and promise them very quick a new bridge.
But he already forgot what was happening about two years ago in New Orleans and Katrina. But there is nothing special over there , because the most of the people are poor black Americans.
Everything was going wrong over there en is still wrong.
Yes you can complain about the third world but open first your eyes about the first world.

    Moronic analogy

hindsight is 20/20. Ther are many things in the USA that need fixing. Thankfully one of the issues will be resolved november 2008. Anyway, Bridges will fall again and many more unfortunate things will happen and yes people will die. Be glad you dont live in Bangladesh or India this time of year. And frankly screw New Orleans. It is built below sea level and they should be thankful it didnt happen sooner. residents never should have gone back there again and try to salvage a situation that will happen all over again. And it will!!!! Nevertheless, The infastructure in the USA is star trek, no Star wars techology better then this place and there is no excuse at all for the philippines not to be using similar technology. The country has no problems boasting about the billions of dollar inflows and investment being made here. so what about the shitty roads, sewage systems, on and on. This is not a big country by the way yet even small cities like Dum suffer from..... The fact is you can find fault with any place in the world. The point I am trying to make here is in countries like the philippines there is so much complacency with the populous that they are happy to just eat and live another day and therefore soooooo much can be taken for granted if you know what I mean and for this reason noting gets done until its too late and i fear this city will be in absolute gridlock in another year or so during the school season with the new robinsons and other developments..
