Rhye, Deeptri is a clinical epidemiologist who I think is still associated with the Sanger Institute, and Queen Mary, University of London. I caught a BBC blurb that the variant increased R by .7. I found her on twitter #Covid19 as the only reference to R increasing by .7. She also referenced the twitter publication of an updated report from scientists studying and measuring the variant. I saw no reference to an increase of .7 in the report, but it was Greek to me. The scientists acknowledged her. I just repeated her statement that the doubling time will fall. You can google all of this.

Trials are ongoing in the UK to establish whether the new variant makes people "sicker" but they do know that it affects more children and young adults than the original variant. (i.e. they get sick and are no longer necessarily asymptomatic). So I guess, by inference you could say that a certain group of the population do get "sicker". But really it's too early to make hard and fast judgments.

This is a good example of how isolation alone is not sufficient to protect the high risk category. My father like yours spent a couple of years in a memory care facility. (Dementia) These memory care facilities are very isolated. The people there are not allowed out of the facility because they cannot remember how to find their way back. Obviously it would be even more strictly isolated now with COVID.
The fact that COVID is able to find its' way into the memory care facility is evidence that a plan that only isolates high risk individuals and then allows low risk individuals to freely go about spreading the infection would be a complete failure.
It surprises me that we are 10 months into the pandemic and there is still confusion as to the proper way to deal with it.- Like x 2

I keep my distance at the bars from the old farts playing billiards and poker (cards not being sanitized after every hand...how f'n stupid is sitting around a poker table with 8-10 people, with not a d*mn one of them under 60 years old?) not for them or fear of COVID but because I dread forced quarantine and the inability to make it to the gym during that time. You want younger people to care but when we go out and see nonsense like this you can't possibly think we are going to take any of this seriously.
Selfish behavior is these unhealthy old farts still going out to the bars, socializing, greeting you with handshakes, playing poker sitting shoulder to shoulder, hitting up prostitutes at why not, going out with their wives/gfs to grocery shop, etc, etc.- Agree x 2

Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are the new mRNA type. These cost more to manufacture than traditional vaccines like Astrazeneca. Astrazeneca is an Adenovirus-based vaccine.
The Sinovac vaccine named CoronaVac is an inactivated vaccine, which works by using killed viral particles to expose the body's immune system to the virus without risking a serious disease response.
Why is the Sinovac vaccine so expensive when it is using old technology?
Even Cambodia knows to steer clear of the Chinese vaccine:

Historically vaccine research is not very profitable because eliminating the disease eliminates revenue.
The pandemic has pushed us to make great gains in research into viruses and the immune system. This additional knowledge will benefit numerous other health issues.- Like x 3

Other news on the new strain of coronavirus is that it is now thought to have potentially originated in Italy. A man there has been tested positive from March through to September, but his viral type was only tested recently. It has been discovered to be the same as the strain first thought to have occurred in the UK. I struggle to believe that this exact mutation has been transmitted through many countries via transmission. I would think this is more likely a natural mutation and could occur anywhere, but again would defer to the experts.
