the Management of the DUCOMI Pier decided to stop all diving activities at that formerly world-class critter divespot.

After my last dive there some days ag, it must be said, that there is also no reason to dive there anymore. The Spot is basically destroyed and might be interesting to dive in about 10 or 15 years again.

    sad but true

Here's the email going around, originally sent by Yvette Lee of PCSSD/DOT this morning:

    Hello Everyone,

I had a very pleasant meeting with Mr Reynald Uy, whom as you all know, is the President of Ducomi Pier.Thank you Annabelle for setting this up.

After speaking to him I found out that

The whole column needs to be reinforced in concrete. The high sulfer content of the water in the area has corroded the steel pillars much faster than what they originally planned.
Unless someone in the group can come up with a proposal on how to do this differently , they will have to do it exactly the way their contractors are doing it now. Andy, you better call your friend in Hk and ask him about the quote he gave bec I am prettty sure it is not repair work but just the inspection . And also to give us a proposal on how to reinforce the pilings.

However the good news is that only 60% (wc is the original pier built in the 90's) needs to be reinforced. He explained that the new part of the pier wc was built in 2002- 2003 does not need reinforcement as of now.(but will also need to be reinforced eventually 5-10 years down the road-hopefully by then the new ones will be festooned with new coral growth.) And he assures everyone that we are all welcome to keep diving that side if we want--under the same arrangements of course.

The new part is on the far side of pier-from where we usually moor...facing the pier from the oceanside, this is the left side of the pier. pay attention because this is important. The pillars that wont be touched will be rows 1 to 5 from the left side and all the columns behind it going towards the shore.

We CAN transfer whatever marine life that we can from the ones that are going to be reinforced--I know we wont be able to transfer the soft coral etc, but if you want to transfer the other stuff like frogfish, pipefishes etc, then do so and place them on columns 1-5.

All the others will be scraped and re-inforced as planned and they can't delay any longer---it was scheduled for repair 2 years ago...

They also need to repair both breasting dolphins..the 2 mini piers. So please transfer marine life from those also....

    Yvette

PS please pass this on to the other dive centers in the area.

Sorry to tell you that that is absolutely Bola to calm people down. They did nothing else than destroying it and sending out "some calm down" letters full of lies last November or so. In my opinion they never planned to do anything else.

I was diving there recently and saw some work they do. They don't give a bloody da@$%@ sh@#$ what happens to the aquatic life there.

Bola it may be, but then again, they're not in the diving business, and I suppose that pier wasn't put up to accommodate divers in the first place, was it? They're in the COCONUT OIL business. No pier=no business. Reinforce the pier=continue the business. I love diving at Ducomi, more so than Apo because of its accessibility, but face it: it's a private wharf, and at least the management is open to suggestions. Some Dauin resorts are mobilizing their teams, so when I get back, I'll be volunteering to help relocate whatever flora and fauna we can manage to move.

Thats true and I agree to that. It is a "private" company and their right to do so. So why are they bullsh@%@ and lying around?

so there letter last year should have simply been:

    Pier closed for renovation. sorry...

Not lying around and talking this environment saving bull. I have no idea when you have been there the last time, but this dive site is absolutely destroyed already, there is not much to rescue.

It was actually the plan (right after the renovation-letter came out last year) to relocate aquatic life and the DUCOMI management did not allow.

Or they wanna do the dive-ops a favor? that they still can promote the pier as a worldclass divesite, stealing money from customers who believe that and spend therefor thousands of dollars to make a vacation here.

Sorry, we see DI as a information source and won't support that kind of stuff... not from the management of DUCOMI and from the dive-op's
