lol I would disagree. Being old does not mean you are smart or wise. Idiots can easily live to a very ripe old age.

I agree that being old does not make one smart or wise - it depends to some extent on how you started out. You are correct that some idiots live to a ripe old age but then so do some smokers - I think the statistics might show that one has a better chance of survival against CERTAIN risks if one is aware (and being aware does not necessarily mean being smart or wise, it just mean knowing).

And being a military man, would you not agree that the chances of survival are greatest for those who know they are crossing a minefield rather than those who do not know it exists? I am thinking of two persons crossing a minefield - one is intelligent but is NOT told it is a minefield and the other is an idiot and IS told it is a minefield. I think the idiot has more chance of surviving - and only because he is aware.

I think genetics and "luck" has more to do with making it to old age than anything.

I'm not saying that being exceptionally stupid won't dramatically decrease your life expectancy (being in the military and not knowing you are surrounded by minefields means you paid absolutely no attention during training). Most videos I've seen of people over the age of 100 are trolling people with their "secrets to living old". I've seen people say cigarettes, wine, x3 Dr. Peppers a day, x12 cigars a day, etc. Survivorship bias. There are plenty of very intelligent, wise and knowledgeable people who died at a relatively young age.

Hey Hey, My My. Surviving longer might equal being aware longer but not necessarily more aware. A tree can survive but can it be aware? It's better to burn out than to fade away.

Yes it can - it has tropic responses that enable it to act towards external stimuli, some of which may be harmful if not responded to.

Good answer. It also reinforces the rest of my post somewhat. A tree can live much loner than a human (aware longer). A tree can't run away from a Forrest fire (not more aware). Oh wait, humans start Forrest fires and trees don't. Now I confused myself:frown:

Haha, no, a tree cannot be aware. No brain means no consciousness. A tree can rote-respond to stimuli but only at the decentralized cellular level. Maybe some primates have consciousness, maybe some dogs would have the self awareness of a 3 year old human...not bad really, but very unfocused and relying on instinct. Dolphins might be fully aware and focused, similar to humans. Pigs... my Gosh, very intelligent, they know what is going on, especially as they “drag their feet” when being led to the slaughterhouse. But trees? I think that I shall never see a human as stupid as a tree...with apologies to greenies AND those who posted the signs in Batinguel.

These tropic (or 'growth' responses) are very slow - for example, leaves turning towards sunlight or roots growing towards water - because of the fact that plants generally don't move their whole structure (their seeds 'move', but that is not the same issue and are due to external aids) and so they do not need fast responses (but if you know the Venus Fly Trap then you will know that some plants can have very fast movements). So if they become 'aware' of a fire, I think it would be a growth movement away from the heat and/or towards water - but it would take a long time and the plant itself would be stuck there anyway.

The moral of this story is not to be born a plant.

The concept of 'awareness' has come up often in this thread and I think (therefore I am!) that it is not entirely related to consciousness (i.e. 'an awareness of being aware') but a response to some stimulus - the response can arise only because of a form of 'awareness' I think. I certainly disagree with the contention that it is related to age - in fact the structure of the intellect is so complex that individual forms of awareness and changing degrees of awareness are going to vary tremendously due to many factors, of which age (young, middle or old) will be only a part.
