I agree with Chuck about being too nervous to own property in the PHL although I am mighty tempted! I have had too many bad experiences over the years and recognize the the law and other people are not too sympathetic with "RICH" foreigners even if we are done wrong to. For example just ONE bad experience of many.... After having LOUD, garbage dumping, unbelieveable sewer waste everywhere, verbally threatening neighbors when I rented that has cured me of ever wanting a PERMANENT residence anywhere in the PHL since apparently I have NO RIGHTS to change the situation. Don't tell me that I should have checked out the place first because all the neighbors renting were GREAT for many months until one moved out and the bad bunch moved in. It is amazing to me how one family can RUIN a good neighborhood quickly.

Although after reading about all the positives regarding gated communities that may sadly be the only "real" solution with the least amount of risk involved.

I have lived in several 'under developed' countries and in my experience the risks of buying for a non local are high , very many people build there dream home near the beach and live happily ever after, but the stories of people loosing everything or living with situations that ruin their day to day lives are just way to common. Often there are legal hurdles that 'can be worked around' only to bite you in the butt 3 years later or as mentioned earlier in the thread a you have a problem with someone or there is a change in the local situation like a karaoke opening 20 meters away. These are things that are intollerable for westerners, if you rent you can loose 30k deposit and walk away, if you own the problem you have may make you house un-saleable and you are stuck there.

It seems that the sense of humour of many posting here is running a little thin! I heard a cute advertisement on the radio the other day. I regret that I don't remember the business name - cause I'd patronize them for this boast alone.

The ad claimed that the store's air conditioning was guaranteed to continue operating despite brownouts. I hope it wasn't a funeral parlour.

    Very re-assuring!
