The highest rates in ASEAN and the highest rate of blackouts in ASEAN. As long as NORECO II is allowed to run their show this way it will continue. You would think the Governor would stand up for the people and demand better... or Duterte the people's President.. but for sure they have an automatic genset.

I have always wondered why everyone refers to it as a brown out... when it is actually a black out..

We hired a licensed electrician because, even though the circuit is quite simple, you are dealing with heavy gauge wires that must be routed to the mains supply with pvc pipe, live mains power, installation of a transfer switch box to the the wall, driving a 10 foot ground rod for the generator (at least you should) and possible electrical inspection. You need to ensure you install in accordance with the PEC (Philippine Electrical Code...and do not earth ground the neutral either). Of course, if you hook it up wrong and try to feed the generator power to the utility for example, you may have some major smoke. And you do need the transfer switch to protect utility workers from electrocution.

Not if it happens during the day, like today. I would have to call it a "DAY OUT". It did start about 6:30 this morning and lasted until 4:30 this afternoon, all DAY long. Thanks to NORECO my Gen Set got a good workout. :depressed: :whistling:

About the transfer switch. There are two types typically used here.
One type is a knife switch. The other is 2 circuit breaker in a metal box with a mechanical interlock (to prevent both breakers from being closed at the same time).
I really DO NOT LIKE the knife switch type. If the switch is not closed properly arcing and a fire can occur.
Both types are approximately the same cost. Breakers in a box would be my choice.

I am curious now. Where did you buy your so-called gen-set? How expensive is it? My son works on line and I think that is going to be helpful.

I tried to buy a generator on Lazada. Never arrived. Got a message saying the item for delivery was 'over-sized' and returned to seller. As if they would not know how big a generator is.

Hello Glenda, just to go online you can use a 1kw small generator that runs outside with an extension cord. I used to see these “portable” generators at Handyman and ACE at City Mall. I think I may have seen them at Citi Hardware.

Citi hardware and ACE also have intermediate models in the 2.5kw range.

If you wish to power the whole house with an AIRCON or two, you will need a 5-10 Kw generator. I purchased mine at Polaris but have seen them at UyMatio too.

The higher power ones (usually with electric start) are the generators we have been discussing. They are in the 50-100k price range.

My suggestions: Buy a generator made by a Japanese manufacturer, especially if it is manual pull-start. My 2.5 kw Honda gen in Siquijor starts on the first pull or maybe the second (after several years use). American and other country’s models usually require a lot more effort to start after a while.

Or, at least have a Japanese-made engine like the Philippine made Promates at Polaris. Those are very good higher power generators and Polaris backs their warranty.

Change the oil regularly, use synthetic auto oil (the difference is amazing in my experience).

Never try to energize the house by plugging a portable generator into a household receptacle; that can put the 220 Volts onto the outside power lines and endanger utility workers. That could be done safely but most people do not know (or may forget) to shut-off the main power before doing that. The transfer switch we were talking about for larger generators prevents that.

If all you want to do is power a PC and a router for internet, you only need a small generator but in that case you need an extension cord to run it from outside to inside the house.

For any generator make sure it is well ventilated outside so the exhaust fumes do not get into the house.

Very important! The exhaust fumes are deadly.

Gasoline is dangerous and must be handled carefully as well. A spark can set it off while refilling. There are less volatile diesel versions with electric start but those are mostly the larger models.

Any good electrician can do it but suggest you go through Polaris. Dont recommend you do it yourself. Whoever does it make sure they have put in a proper change over switch so that it is impossible to run the thing connected to the outside source otherwise you will be trying to provide power to everyone on the grid and the fuse will just keep popping. Also, never start the thing connected to the house. it must be started first and then switched over. And always switch back to supply before stopping it.
