I see many street dogs suffering with mange, is there a vet that will give you medicine to put them out of misery? Doubt it but is there an amimal protection agency to enforce cruelty to animals? Dogs are on 2 foot chains and never get a chance to exercise or have human contact and run in circles and bark and cry. Or kept in small cages and this is what they call security?

    1) No, no vets will give you "medicine to put them out of their misery", you'd have to buy it. Try a cheaper method: - a pack of MSG, (mono-sodium glutamate) in a small piece of meat or bread, commonly known under a trade name of Aji-No-Moto or similar. However, you may have future issues with the proud owners of these barrio terriers.
    2) No, as far as I know there are no animal protection agencies here, that enforce being cruel to animals, (or any that enforce you to be kind to them).
    3) Yes, that is what most call security.

    Republic Act Number 8485.
The Animal Welfare Act of 1998.
    The Bureau of Animal Industry.
    The Philippines Animal Hospital Association.
The Philippines Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
The Philippines Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
    The Philippines Veterinary Medical Association.

The Animal Welfare Act of 1998 covers the welfare of all animals, whether pets or not, including birds. It also makes specific reference to dog fighting and horse fighting. The latter is particularly bizarre and sickening, as horses are not naturally aggressive except in their wild environment, and then only to establish supremacy during a mating ritual. It is known to take place in remote areas of Mindanao.

Yes, I know, it's one thing to have laws in place. It's a whole different ball game as to whether the laws are enforced or not.

    Obviously doesn't include cockfighting then.

Your last comment was particularly true of course.

Of your list, I'd imagine that very few people have ever heard of any of these, maybe the last one (and they'd be presumably the vets/vet assistants in town, who might or might not be members). I certainly haven't seen any of these 'existing' organizations down the numerous cockpits in the province protesting, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Yes. I shouldn't think that too many people know of these organisations. If they tried to interfere in the every-day life of the Philippines it could be quite chancy for them and probably futile. Like pushing water up a hill.

However, my reason for posting was to answer the question posed by Patty, where she asked if there were any animal welfare agencies in the Philippines. Those that I listed in post #13 of this thread is a selection that I found on google, all of whom were party to drafting the relevant Act. Whether these organisations have any clout, or are even remotely effective, is another matter.

On the subject of rabies -- does anyone know where the "clinics" are in town for free vaccines? I know our vet can do it, but I'm told that occasionally free immunizations are done. Anyone have info on this?

    Much appreciated!

I can't help you on this one, but I'm sure there are others on the Forum who will be able to advise you.

Far more importantly, you need to know where to go to get anti-rabies injections for yourselves, and get them faster than fast. Time and speed is vital. It's a race between the virus and the serum. Whichever one takes control of your nervous system is the winner. And the winner takes all.

City Vet's office, public market area (upstairs # 2 building?), but they 'like' a donation, (but then again doesn't every govt dept tho). However, as a word of warning, last time I got their free vaccine, 15+ yrs ago, both my young dogs at the time, died within 2 days after receiving it. If you happen to like your dog, stump up and 'bite the payment bullet' and pay a private vet to do it, at least you have a right of recourse if he/she messes up.

    Info

Can any of the members tell me is there a good vet here ?
 In my experience the better the Vet the better the meds.
As for Patty's comment about the Mange all it takes is one injection and the scratching and fur grows back very soon, i know this as a friend used to have a Rescue Centre in Thailand, the only difference is they had a spaying program. Well as we know that would never happen in this country because Animals have no souls as the same applies in Spain, this is a fact!! as they don't believe in contraception, but as we know Spain is changing!!
