He said, she said. Someone is lying...probably both parties. The truth is likely somewhere between what these two belligerents are claiming.

    Mathew 26:52

Perhaps these self proclaimed Christians should brush up on their own beliefs. They are all truly a disgrace to the religion.

Duterte promised death squads and he is delivering, the Commies promised death squads and are delivering. Probably a good deal of bribes, smuggling and politics mixed in as well. I'm not sure what country serves as an example of oppression and violence leading to peace and prosperity that these leaders follow, it seems to generally be a losing game to me. You want drug violence? Raise the stakes and make it more profitable but also more dangerous. You want political violence? Use violence to silence your opposition. Hopefully it all settles down soon. The silver lining for me I guess is that it will discourage foreigners from moving there and cool off property prices and an ex-pat overpopulation. La Trinidad is looking better right now though.

“DUMAGUETE CITY -- A former mayor, his cousin, a councilor, and a barangay captain were killed in two separate shooting incidents in Ayungon town and Canlaon City in Negros Oriental early Saturday.

Sketchy reports from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office identified the victims as former Ayungon mayor Edsel Gimang Enardecido, 60; his cousin, Leo Enardecido, 45; Canlaon City Councilor Ramon Jalandoni, 65, of Barangay Panubigan; and Barangay Captain Ernesto Posadas of Panubigan, Canlaon City.

The first shooting incident took place in Canlaon City at around 12:14 a.m. when unidentified armed men, believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA), barged into the house of Jalandoni and shot him dead.

The gunmen marked Jalandoni’s car and a wall of his house with “Mabuhay ang NPA… Ibagsak si Duterte (Long live the NPA... Down with Duterte)”.

Some 26 minutes later, at about 12:40 a.m., unidentified armed men also forced their way into the house of Posadas and gunned him down. The suspects also wrote “Mabuhay ang NPA” on a wall of the victim's house before leaving in a white van.

Police investigators in Canlaon City believed gunmen from the same group killed both Canlaon officials based on the pattern of the crimes.

Meanwhile in Ayungon, an initial police report said unidentified armed men entered the house of former mayor Enardecido in Barangay Tampocon I at about r2:30 a.m. and shot him dead. His cousin, Leo Enardecido was killed in the same attack.

Police has reported 15 people killed in different parts of Negros Oriental in the past two days.

Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo is slated to hold a press conference at noon Saturday to address the spate of killings in the province, which has escalated following the July 18 slay of four policemen in Ayungon.

The Philippine National Police is yet to ascertain whether all the shooting incidents are related. (PNA)”

The problem with this world is people can say anything without a shred of proof and it is the job of other side to prove the statement untrue. An excellent political tool.

I don't get why the NPA still exists. It hasn't accomplished much in its long history, other than to kill and steal. In addition, the Philippine government seems to have done little about them. The losers in all of this seem to be the farmers and residents of the provinces. Is there a greater good that I'm not aware of?

They can, but, if untrue, that is defamation and is illegal...with it being a criminal offense in the Philippines.

The Philippine government has done a lot about them. Look at their numbers decades ago vs now.

As for why they still exist: because the government treats the lower-class like garbage. When you take your ideas to extremes, force them on others and treat a large swath of your society like crap you are going to inevitably create an extreme opposing view. It is how it has always worked and it is how it will always continue to work. Hate begets hate, violence begets violence. There is nothing new in this world, just recycled history. If the Philippines continues down its current path we already know how it will end.

    I don't know.
Can you please substantiate this statement with examples? Some of us may not know what you are referring to. Thanks.

Just off the top of my head:
    Alt-Right Neo-Nazis and Antifa.
    Pure capitalism vs Marxism/communism
    Fascism vs Anarchist
Unbridled completely open free trade vs isolationism
Unregulated free speech vs legislation forcing people to call people by their preferred pronouns
Right to life vs woman's choice
(Don't take this as an invitation to go into details about these topics here. Start a thread on the controversial section of you want.)

Whenever you become militant about these ideas you are inevitably going to get people that militantly oppose you.

Each of these ideas above have at least SOME merit at their core/origin or are, at least, based off of some idea that does. Where most people actually stand is somewhere between these extremes. We should stop letting the minority control the conversation.

Or were you talking about the path the Philippines is headed? When was this "temporary" martial law declared in Mindanao? I guess it really depends on your definition of "temporary". I suppose a few years or even decades could be considered temporary depending on context. However, it seems to me that once a government has achieved an elevated level of control and power it is rather difficult to get them to give it up without some intervention from the citizens or outside forces. (Martial law was just extended for another year last week. I wonder if all the ills on the island will be resolved satisfactorily in the timeframe they have set for this extension. :meh:)

Would you say they treat them poorly or just ignore them all together? Are you saying that the NPA treats the citizens better? From what I've heard that doesn't seem to be the case. If they were attacking the government I could see your logic, but it seems that it is the general populace that suffers the most.

After 27 years, it wouldn't surprise me if disillusionment with the group was the primary cause of the reduced membership. At some point in time, you have to say this just isn't working.

The NPA does mainly attack the government. Almost all of their attacks are on the police, military or politicians. They do threaten/harass/demand "revolutionary taxes" from private businesses but that should be expected from a group that thinks all business should be owned and operated by the government (communism). The military and police also have their flaws with attacking innocent civilians.

The government actively patrols and fights the npa. I have been in regions where I have ran across both military patrols and npa checkpoints. Ignore the military, pay the NPA "revolutionary tax" and go about your business. Neither of the two groups care about or pay much attention to civilians, especially expats.
