We ended up with the 5g (today 105 down/220 up) and the 4g (53/ 47) when we upgraded to fibre, pldt's wi-fi router / modem seems to pump out both. We have to switch to the 4g for printing / scanning because we have not reconfigured our printer. Sometimes, it seems one or the other isn't working well, but that may be my imagination.

The speed within the Philippines is meaningless since 99.99% of the internet is not on Philippine servers.

PLDT has issued a statement about the slow and intermittent internet speeds experienced by a lot of users, saying that it is due to combined effects of unrelated events on one of its international links...and blahs.
I'm so disappointed with the PLDT's service right now.

Hi Edward, the printer if it supports wireless will likely be 2.4GHz only which would explain why you need to switch back to other band to print.

Some of the PLDT and Globe routers will have both 5GHz and 2.4Ghz broadcasting by default and that is a good thing when used properly. Rule of thumb 5GHz less effected by Wi-Fi interference and better for short range higher bandwidth, same room as router streaming or gaming for example. 2.4GHz is often congested if you live near a lot of other people with routers (apartments) but will give you better range, far end of the house or outside etc. This might explain the different speeds you get depending on the band your on.

Note its 5GHz Wif-Fi, related to the frequency it uses and not to be confused with 5G like the cellular technology not yet in Dumaguete.

A good app for your phone (Android) to check all this is "WiFi Overview 360" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.android.wifiscanner&hl=en&gl=US
Free version has lots of handy tools and can help map out a house and decide where you need extra hops/hubs etc, great for new houses or new equipment. Also has a great tool to see the other peoples networks and the channels they are using for their 2.4GHz bands and 5GHz and suggests what to change yours to to get the least amount of interference. Most routers are automatic but are easily changed in the admin page and you cant really make a mistake.

    No :-D
5GHz and 2.4GHz are the two wifi bands that your PLDT router provides for your household (try thinking of it as one radio station broadcasting on both FM and AM). All the data comes down the same fiber cable. And it's nothing to do with "5G" either.

Every couple months, the PLDT fibre slows to a crawl.
When we call the service number, 171 on smart, if we tell them our line needs to be "reconfigured," that almost always fixes it. Except of course for the kerfuful back in march.

The PLDT routers do not allow gadgets from the LAN to 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz. Don't ask me why, they find this safer... So you printer on 2.4Ghz can not see your laptop on 5Ghz. If you can spend a day calling the helpdesk, they can change this for you... Untill the next firmware update or whatever they play around with and your settings get reset and then you can call again. I just bought my own router so all gadget from any part of the network can see each other.

Correct, speedtest within the Philippines is useless.
Well, useless. If the speed to Makati is to slow it can help to call 171 but after that they wont be able to help you is my experience. Then it is a national traffic jam..

Since my work is mostly in Amsterdam, doing a speedtest to a server there says so much more. Speeds are most descent now here, the ping at 265ms is still workable but around 100ms would make my life so much better. Well it is quit far, so what ping can we expect..

    PLDT: YUCK
for the dozenth time this year, the PLDT fibre system is totally screwed up ("Sorry Sir, there is nothing wrong in Dumaguete, we will check your line")...
Ping is over 900, download is 0.01, etc... Cannot contact service via mobile.. Is this just us ???.

The government tries to encourage Philippine businesses, but won't provide any backup if the PH business is so greedy or incompetent that their systems are falling apart, totally behind demand, money spent on casinos or overseas assets......
The last time it happened, Globe cut their lines when installing their own system.
SO SAD... SO DEAL WID IT....
And Filipinos won't elect solid anti-corruption candidates (a marcos is one of the leading candidates ??????)

Our PLDT Fibr went to a snails pace around late morning and isn't back to normal speed as yet. Ghost in the machine maybe to tie in with the day.
