Movie Industry Enjoyed $38bn Box Office in 2015

While the entertainment industry always claims that online piracy is devastating its revenues, such devastation is not visible at the worldwide box office in 2015, which surpassed $38bn. The North American theaters alone raked in more that $11bn (for the first time ever).

It is not a secret for anyone that today watching pirated movies is easier than ever before, as you can choose from hundreds of torrent services, streaming portals and direct download sites. Moreover, there are a lot of dedicated apps you can use to stream the latest movies for free. In response, movie industry tries to do its best to contain piracy, though it seems to be a near impossible task. The main problem is that anonymous owners operate most of the unauthorized services.

Every day the Movie Picture Association of America and other groups claim that hundreds of thousands of jobs are at stake, and the US economy is losing billions due to digital piracy, because unauthorized downloads are slowly killing the content industry. The question is why these claims are not reflected in 2015 box office revenues.

According to statistics, the box office revenues just exceeded $11 billion, which is more than ever before at the North American box office, representing roughly a 9% change compared to 2014. In the meantime, the worldwide box office also reached an all-time record, with the global grosses estimated at a staggering $38 billion.

One more indication that business is going well for the industry is the increase in the number of tickets sold. For instance, theaters in North America increased their ticket sales by more than 5% last year.

At the same time, one can’t claim that illegal downloads have no effect at all. Maybe the movie industry would make even more money if it didn’t exist. Or maybe not. You should also take into account that the revenues of the movie industry aren’t limited to the box office: the copyright owners also profit from DVD sales and various streaming platforms.

In other words, we can see that piracy has certainly not destroyed the movie industry just yet, and all of us go to the movie theaters to pay for our entertainment from time to time.
