If you’re into travel in the Philippines, you’ll know that there are only few places in the Philippines that are as awe-inspiring.

Dumaguete is best known for Silliman University, the Philippines’ first Protestant school, and the annual Silliman Writers’ Workshop, which is one good reason for writers to travel in the Philippines. But Silliman is not the only reason for a tourist to include Dumaguete in the itinerary for travel in the Philippines.

Dumaguete faces Tanon Strait and is accessible from Cebu via ferry boat. It sits across an exotic location for travel in the Philippines: the mystical island of Siquijor, which is the only place in the Philippines that’s famed for its witches.

Dumaguete got its name from the Visayan word “daggit” or “to snatch”. Dumaguete has always had the power to snatch visitors - it was frequently attacked by Muslim pirates during Spanish times. (They were not going on pleasure travel in the Philippines.)

Tourists on a high to travel in the Philippines will be glad to know that Dumaguetenons are no longer on the defensive against invasive visitors. Dumaguete is now, in fact, nicknamed The City of Gentle People: a green sign to travel in the Philippines.

What makes Dumaguete beautiful is also what greets visitors when they disembark from the boat. The esplanade along Rizal Boulevard, which is lined by lamp posts and acacia trees, is the coziest that any city can get.

The incandescent glow from the lamp posts at night time, and the shadows that aged old trees cast on the street, add to the surreal feel of the place – inspiring poetry among writers on their literary travel in the Philippines.

But Rizal Boulevard also attracts the partying lot and the less cerebral types.

Across the esplanade, bars line up the streets to give tourists a more distant, yet cozier view of the lights, the foreboding trees and the dark sea. To where the lamp posts are, balut vendors and other vendors give locals the opportunity to accompany their chill-out time with food and drinks.

But it is not just Rizal Boulevard that makes Dumaguete a must-write in the travel in the Philippines itinerary. Dumaguete is just nearby Bais Bay, where tourists can go on dolphin and whale watching when they travel in the Philippines.

I would personally say, It's about time. When we were there in Dumaguete last month, we were referred to Dr. Alcantara (whose clinic is in Silliman Medical Center) coz my husband's medication for high blood is not available. And we just can't believe how chaos it was. As we approached to her receptionist in a little table just along the corridor with these people standing along side waiting for the doctors to see them and then the receptionist asked you questions and why you need the doctor to see you for... And all those ears and eyes were at you.... GOD, WHAT IF YOU HAVE AN EMBARRASSING ILLNESS!!!! There was no privacy at all.
    That's really good news, echir.

Well this speaks of the difference between the Philippines and the UK . This should be addressed by the medical care practice of Silliman or to every hospitals in the Philippines,as this is part of the medical ethical standards that they have overlooked ,by which they are failing the patients being so lenient of the right to individual privacy.

I understand it must be uncomfortable episode to be ask by the receptionist what the problem is ,with all others listening in the cue, goodness me .It's lucky your problem was only about some medication . This type of practice must freak out anybody ask with all ears listening esp if the problem is odd , like having warts on bum cheek or having itchy red @ss lols :D ,can't even whisper closely to the receptionist ? Why not write SUMC of your complaint crissar, hopefully it will grab their attention , realizing their mistakes and might well serve as basis of change and improvement in their system together with this soon new refurbishment building ...and NO MORE NOSEY RECEPTIONIST . Will be good for everybody.

The SUMC do entertain patient complaints.I came across an article couple of yrs ago about a patient treated badly by one staff who was less sensitive about the patient's emotional trauma suffered during her miscarraige...spitting series of irresponsible abusive remarks about her unborn fetus. Silliman Medical center responded immediately and acted upon the complaint received ,urgently investigated the specific staff .The last update I knew he was facing some disciplinary action.

Silliman University's Portal West Building with National bookstore as the anchor store. Soon, plenty of shops and boutiques, as well as parlors, internet cafes and computer showrooms will be opening in this prime business address in downtown Dumaguete
