From living water to toxic sludge: the Philippine island devastated by an oil spill – a photo essay The slick from sunken tanker Princess Empress has harmed livelihoods, caused health problems and done untold damage to marine life. Can Mindoro island recover? Words and photographs by Alecs Ongcal
Yet another nail in the coffin of this Planet! Greed, Corruption and Unaccountability seems to be the norm these days
If (big if) they manage to clean up the affected areas properly then nature will probably at least partly recover like it did elsewhere after bad oil spills, but it will take time. https://response.restoration.noaa.g...n-valdez-timeline-of-recovery-5jun14_noaa.png The timeline of the exxon valdez disaster doesn't look reassuring at all for currently affected livelihoods though.
Some Brits might remember the Torrey Canyon incident just off Land's End in 1967. At the time the Torrey Canyon was the largest ship ever to be wrecked - with its huge cargo of crude oil from Kuwait. They tried to deal with it by bombing the tanker - I was there watching it and often they missed! The press descended in droves and I was working in a restaurant which many of them used - a waitress overheard one reading his (made up) story that "People were out praying in the streets" to make the locals seem simple (and that lie was printed in his rag the next day). So press lies never change. The oil on the local beaches was colossal and it affected huge amounts of wildlife, even as far as the Channel Islands - as did the chemicals they used in the cleaning operations. But eventually the region recovered.
They need to be fined £££/ lots and lots regardless of the insurance or pay X 10 for the privilege. Ain't like they don't make billions...
You can fine or throw as much money as you like at the problem but the one thing money can't buy, is time. Like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, its a little too late and should never be allowed to happen in the first place! View attachment upload_2023-4-26_16-43-47.png
