It is a shame to tell how many can openers I buy. Any one have a spare to sell made in the US? Also what is the best brand to buy in the US?

Yes for some reason can openers here are not very good, brought two very expensive openers last year from Europe and they too did not last so long

I have said this before and firmly stand by it, I am totally convinced it is the C...p metal used in the cans that is the main Culprit. You can bring the hardiest Openers from all over and they are useless in a very short time here. The metal seems to go to dust and just clogs up and ruins the mechanism of even the best openers we can buy.

I've had the same can opener for about 2-3 years now. My gf has problems with it but I just have to put a bit of sideways pressure (towards the middle of the can) on it and it works just fine. It has "Swing-A-Way" stamped on it. (And despite the name I have not have to use it to beat a can open with it once. lol)

It's rusted and disgusting looking but it works (I think sharpening the cutting wheel a bit would make it like new again):

BTW: This was locally purchases. Where or for how much, I have no idea.

I used the can opener on my Leatherman tool, no problems. My old swiss army knife's can opener wouldn't have had any trouble. A P-38 can opener wouldn't have any trouble and I intend to bring several on my return as gifts for people I see using a knife and a spoon. Yes they are not as easy to use as the usual kitchen aid but they get the job done and will last. The P-38 will also open cans with a deep rim like US Army T-rat pans or the top of coke/beer cans to make useful containers out of them.

I'd love to have a couple of the old steel P38 can openers. The new aluminum ones are crap IMPO.
