I had an account at China Bank here before, through my employer. No problems with it. You can find work teaching in Dumaguete, but the pay rate is pathetic. My job here pays less than 10% of what my last job in the states did. The percentage is even smaller compared to when I taught in Taiwan. Working here is just a fun way to keep busy.

    China Bank

DoDong-Is the bank in the middle of Dumaguete(or Valencia?) and easily accessible?Do they have full service like savings accounts,ATM and transfer service? What do they charge for withdrawals?Do they accept "Union Pay" atm cards? Will they exchange pesos to American usd in case I choose to transfer money from there to usa?Was is the limit or a savings account that I can have there? Also are they an honest bank?I would think so being china based and all the branches they have in Philippines.....Jimmy

I bank with several banks here and as far as I am concerned, China Bank is the best.

    Facts:

Located in Central Dumaguete, and all over the Philippines in major cities.
Has an Excellent On Line Offering. Highly recommend you get it, its free. see China Banking Corporation [ChinaBank] - Personal Banking
Member of Bancnet, so you can withdraw from thousands of ATM's all over the Philippines
Can transfer on Line to any Bancnet Bank, up to 20K per day for cost of P25.00. Transfer is Instant.
Daily Withdrawal Limit P20K (includes any on line transfers in this amount, so total cash out per day is 20K)
Pay a whole bunch of bills and reload PrePaid Sim Cards On Line
You can link many different types of Accounts to your On Line Access, including $US and Euro
You can do foreign Exchange transfers on line (very few banks offer this) up to P 500,000.00 per day. Exchange rate is sometimes better than on the street, surprisingly. I use this extensively
They only Charge $3.00 for incoming transfers, however, watch out for your TT or Swift Charges from the sending bank.
You can transfer to other Chinabank Accounts up to P50K per day (this is over and above the 20K daily withdrawl limit)
Excellent IPhone App, it is actually a web app that detects the IPhone and other mobile devices. You can do most of the above on the mobile device.

Only time I actually go to the bank is to deposit checks or pick up bank statements, both of which are rare. Do not need statements as transactions are on line anyway.

The only negative I have experienced is that if you need a password reset, you have to order it and actually turn up to collect the envelope. Some other banks will do it via email. So , don't screw up your login, you get three goes and it will lock the access, requiring a password reset, which is a pain

    Cheers

My only comment about China bank here is the waiting. During peak hours, you could be sitting there a long, long time before you are served. It is a good bank, thoiugh. Regarding apartment, I know of a new bachelor's pad which I am sure does not cost much. Would you like me to inquire how much the bachelor's pad cost?

What is your budget, if I may be so bold to ask? This info may help myself and others to steer you in the right direction.

It's in the middle of Dumaguete, and easily accessible. I don't think they charge for withdrawals. I don't know what services they offer. I don't know about Union Pay cards, or if they exchange pesos for dollars or if there are limits on accounts. All I've ever done there is withdraw money, in person or with the ATM card. I do my banking elsewhere, it's just the bank my employer used to pay me.
