Apparently if you talk about the rat you saw out of the corner of your eye in the house it will come bite your ankles when you aren't expecting it. I was warned very sternly that I should not mention the rat because it would be upset if it heard me. This is a strange, and new, superstition for me. I guess I have to whisper about my plans of murdering the little diseased rodent.....or else it will poison me first? (Must have some d*mn smart rats in the Philippines)

I think this is a variation of a old superstition from "Way Not Disco" I heard many years ago:

Apparently if you talk out of the side of you mouth, and place a 1000 P bill sticking out of you pocket while you see a lady out of the corner of your eye she will enter your life. When she gets to your home she will to try consume you, as she works her way down to your biting your ankles when you aren't expecting it :(. I was warned very sternly about looking at ladies out of the corner of my eye, while showing a 1000 P bill in Why Not by a man that had no ankles or feet left but he did have better than 20/20 vision and had a smile on his face. That is a strange, cultural superstition for me, that I have never experienced. I may try it some night... with a lady, not the rat. if I can tell them apart.

That is a new one...no mice or rats in the house so far but have them living in the roof of the nipa. I want to go with poison for them but the wife is worried about the smell...no matter what they need to go. Traps are another option.
