So the electric jeep was launched in Makati and Bacolod last month. This was made possible in partnership with Greenpeace, an environmental activist group. But little did the country know that US-based engineers who are from Dumaguete, together with some partners, started their own research and development on electic vehicles five years ago.

Engr. Rene Tuballa, founder of Insular Technologies, will be launching tomorrow (which is also the Founders Day of Silliman University) at 12 noon at the Dumaguete Boulevard the Dumaguete-made electric vehicles.

This electric vehicle was earlier paraded this afternoon around the main thoroughfares of Dumaguete during the Founders Day parade of Silliman.

Here are the pictures of the locally-made electric vehicles:

Dumaguete to showcase locally made E-jeep

IF BACOLOD City is one of the beneficiaries of the E-jeep (Electronic jeepney) courtesy of Greenpeace International, Dumaguete City in Oriental Negros will have its own version, too.

This, however, is courtesy of Dumaguete’s local manufacturer - the Insular Technologies.

According to Rene M. Tuballa, founder partner of Insular Technologies, their model electric vehicle is locally assembled in Dumaguete with parts from United States and has a DC motor prime mover power by 18-6 volt golf cart Motolite batteries, and will be paraded in Dumaguete on August 27 during the Silliman University Founder’s Day at 2 p.m.

    Complete story here.

Electric vehicle to be launched in Dumaguete tomorrow

Philippines Star, Sunday, August 26, 2007

The first electric vehicle made in the Philippines will be launched in Dumaguete City tomorrow on the occasion of Silliman University’s 106th Founders Day.

Unlike the China-made E-jeepneys plying the streets of Makati, Insular Technologies’ E-vehicle seeks to create an industry in the Philippines which could develop our technical capability in design, engineering and manufacture of electric vehicle parts.

The E-vehicle was assembled in Dumaguete using parts from the United States. It has a dc motor prime mover powered by 18-6 volt golf cart Motolite batteries.

The original vehicle was an “easy ride” gas engine powered vehicle commonly used around Negros Oriental for public transport.

Insular Technologies was founded last year by SU alumnus Rene Tuballa with three other people from Dauin, Negros Oriental.

The E-vehicle is envisioned to provide drivers currently renting vehicles with a more sustainable means of livelihood.

“Our vehicle is for people who are only renting a vehicle for the day. Our company is envisioned to be a microfinance technology management company that will manage everything fro the drivers from “cradle to grave.” All they have to do is drive safely and earn money. The daily payment will be much lower than what they are paying now for renting a vehicle and this will be a way for them to own the vehicle after so many years,” Tuballa said.

The E-vehicle’s parts are imported from the US but Insular Technologies plan to eventually have them “reversed engineered,” designed and manufactured in the Philippines to create employment, business, and industries.

“Electric motors are not new, chargers and dc controllers are power electronics which anybody can design. So why do we have to import the whole vehicle? We are absolutely against it.” He said.

“Collaboration with universities is important. We want Dumaguete and Negros (Oriental and Occidental to be the bastion or haven of technical innovations in the manufacture of electric vehicles,” he added.

Tuballa will bring the vehicle to Bacolod in September to explore possible partnerships with the local industry and universities there.

As far I know, this vehicle will cost lower than the imported E-jeep in Makati and Bacolod.

Dumaguete produces a locally made electric jeepney.

    Dumaguete

Negros Oriental has a first, a locally produced electric jeepney. Built by Dumaguette's Insular Technologies which is run by Negros' own engineers, they have come up with an electric jeepney that will help reduce pollution, especially if it is taken up by many local operators.

And being built in the Philippines rather than imported, it will help the local economy, provide employment and help put Negros on the map if these electric jeepneys can be exported.

Riding in the Electric Jeepney are: Negros Oriental Governor Macias, Negros Oriental Board Member Villegas, and Insular Technologies Partner from California Eli Alama.

The project is the brainchild of 4 engineers who grew up in Negros, all working in the States, they are:

Rene Tuballa, Electrical Engineer; Edmund Tuballa, Mechanical/ Airline Engineer; Eli Alama, Electrical Engineer and Edy Tuballa, EE/Computer Science Internet Engineer/Architect.

    The technical specs are:

    It is 25 HorsePower motor

    6 hours charging time

Top speed of 100KM/Hour (with out load so far).

It can run 100 KM with 80% Depth of Discharge for battery

    Average recommended speed is 50km/Hr.

The target is something that can ply within 10-25km radius from the city, it is essentially for town and city, not long distance.
