    Hi all.

I visited Dumaguete first time a couple of weeks ago, and at first sight I must say the city looked just like a very nice city to live.

I used to live in Cebu City for 1 1/2 years, then moved to Toledo on Cebu's west coast, where I stay now. Life in Cebu was fun, but I think the city is growing too large - I don't like the traffic. Toledo is OK, but after 7 months here, it starts to get boring. I have to go to Cebu twice a month or so, to stock up some hard to get-items, and catch up with some restaurant and nightlife.

Dumaguete seemed for me like the perfect size city. Bigger than Toledo, stocked up with much more restaurants, a couple of delis I noticed, a nice baywalk and pretty clean compared to Cebu City and Toledo.

Anyone else lived in Cebu City before, and made the move here? What was/is the biggest difference?

Before considering a move, I would like to try out for a month or so. Anyone know a nice furnished 2BR apartment/house I could rent for a month, and at what cost? I need a proper internet connection, min 1MB, preferably more.

Another question - I have to live on a gluten free diet, and make my own bread. In Cebu, I can buy gluten free bread mix at Healthy Options, Ayala. Anyone know if I can buy this in Dumaguete?

    Thanks,
    Lars

Welcome to the Forum. Regarding gluten, there is a thread dated 2/18/11 labeled Food Allergies with good input regarding gluten. You can do a search on gluten or food allergies and you will find it.
You can also search on apartment for rent and have a look. Good luck.

    Hi

Hi, I lived in Cebu City for four years before coming down to Dumaguete. A great move for me but everyone is different. It was the same reasons as you mentioned, too busy, and i think the traffic and pollution over the last few years is getting out of control. I can maybe also help you with an apartment. If you check out the classified section, apartments for rent Bacong. I built these last year. Im sorry i cant help on the gluten free diet, i know nothing about that but as said mentioned above there was a thread made before on that subject a couple of weeks ag. Good luck with whatever you chose to do

Welcome Lars. We met one day at Mooon Ayala (LinC get together). Glad you enjoyed Duma enough to consider it a place to land.

Yan-Yan trading near the public market might and I do mean might, have Gluten free flour, speak to the owner/manager not the staff or you will probably get the usual standard thousand yard stare or a "no"...... If not they might be able to order it for you, possibly by the sack.
They hide specialist flour in the freezers at the back of the tills, I buy my wholemeal flour there.
Can you use rice flour to bake bread?(certainly biscuits, I know). Normally that is gluten free isn't it?

Hi Lars, you may be able to reduce your trips to Cebu to once a month instead of the 2 living in Toledo. But, I think you will still probably get bored if you stay in Dmgte all the time. Also, still many items must be purchased in Cebu as they are still not yet available in Dmgte.

I was in Cebu city few days ago catching a flight and will be there again for return flight,,I was attracted to the attractions we have not in dumaguete but one night in a hotel there and I was weak as limp biscuit and felt like i had no energy...The pollution there is not worth all the things they have..Manila is the only other place I feel bad like that when there..bacolod is somewhat overwhelming to me also but proportionate to the city size...I manage ok in dumaguete as far as pollution goes..

I was born and lived in Cebu for 23 years. It was just a sudden decision to moved to Dumaguete for some reason. At first, it was really uncomfortable to me for I am used to a big city. Eventually, I fell inloved with place so I bought a small property there near the airport lived there for 5 years...

Sad to say, I left again but hoping I can come back soon...I miss walking along the boulevard, sit on benches and eat peanuts while looking at the sea...Life is so simple there...

I would definitely recommend to try to live there for a month or two...

    Goodluck...

Thanks for all kind replies. I guess we will rent a furnished apartment for a month or so to check it out. Not exactly sure when, but in the near future I guess.

Concerning the gluten free flour, I can stock up in Cebu City, no problem. I have a motorbike and like to roam around anyway, so will probably be in Cebu once in a while.
