I'm a bit surprised this topic has not yet surfaced. As a Westerner, one of my biggest concerns about moving to a town like Dumaguete would be the quality of health care available. My fiancee Marilyn in Dumagete actually goes to Cebu for her doctor's appointments, since they have more technologically advanced equipment and arguably better doctors.

Is good, affordable health care available to a vast majority of people in Dumaguete? While it's great to see so much growth happening in the Gentle City, I hope this key element is not overlooked.

    my response to health care

Kuya, I don't know why Marilyn doesn't have any confidence with the health care system in Dumaguete. I have to say that Silliman Medical Center and Holy Child are quite comparable to the best facilities in health care. Silliman University has been quite prominent in having one of the best Nursing Deprtments in the whole Philippines. Why would they deprive their hospital with the best if they produce the "best?"

As for good, affordable health care being available to a vast majority of people, I have to say that's not the case at all. You see, most people don't have health insurance. So, they can't afford to go to Silliman or Holy Child. They instead go to the provincial hospital since it's cheap.

I actually agree with sheelah , Dumaguete isn’t that bad compared to other places around the Philippines . My mother went through two surgical operations and all were done in Dumaguete. One was to remove her malignant goiter and that was in late 70’s,the other one in 2002 was a mastectomy of her left breast.
She had done all her chemotheraphy treatment (for breast cancer ) only in Dumaguete, one in 2002 and one in 2005.
She had the option of going to Cebu or Manila but she deslikes travelling so much. The Dr assisting her all through was formerly based in St Lukes Hospital in Manila and who moved to Dumaguete . She’s fine now , and kept taking her prescribed medications to stop any tumour growth or some metastatis. An uncle also survived through on going dialysis also done in Dgte, his son though who’s also a surgeon (Dr Jonathan Amante) helped him through all of it .
I had motor cycle accident in Sibulan and was unconscious for several days 3 skull fractures and was fed by a tube going through my nose, that was way back 1990 (student days) and that was in Silliman Medical center , and I came out fine, good heavens I could be in veggie state now. I think it was plane God’s grace and blessing I survive through without complications with my head bashed around.

But I would admit though ,Dgte hasn’t got the fascilities and enough number of highly qualified surgeons to do intricate surgical operations like heart bypass , brain surgery, hip replacement etc.

But in terms of seeing a doctor for simple body aches or infections that can be more likely treated with antibiotics or like tonsilitis, why go to Cebu ,unless feeling too seriously ill .

    Thanks for the replies...

I think she had heard stories about the equipment not being as advanced in Dumaguete...specifically scanning machinery like ultrasounds. She will need to have an ultrasound this weekend and is going to Cebu for it. She went there la few years ago as well.

I know she does have more of a specialist in Cebu, as opposed to a general practictioner.

Wow, pickled_newt...glad you're okay. Those kinds of accidents so often end in a much different way. I'd say you are blessed

my wife got an ultrasound in dumaguete and our daughters were born at silliman medical - if I had to get bypass surgury I would go up to Cebu Doctors Hospital, but Silliman is pretty good by philippine standards - I dont know about holy child, but avoid the provential hospital unless you are desperate and destitute

In Cebu I would chose the Chinese hospital over Cebu Doctors, I have recently visited and used both and the Chinese hospital was far more professional in the way they handled everything.

Cebu Doctors spent half day pushing me between different people without even getting to the problem at hand while the Chinese hospital issued a patient ID and off we went to the right person right away with a way to track back where we had been already.

Facilities also looked better at the Chinese hospital in my opinion.

I actually hv a cousin who had cosmetic surgery (nose job and lipo ) done in Cebu 2 yrs ago. She's a tisay , have perk up nose but here we go some people aren't happy of their 'noses'.Perhaps has the reason to go for lipo coz she was bit flabby but not too fat .It turned out fine ,can't even tell she got nose job,but she was in agony for couple of wks, sustained with strong pain reliever for that span of time. Overall opinion, the Cebu cosmetic surgeon must have done it so well.

Just out of idle curiousity...is there an ambulance service in Dumaguete? I've also heard that CAT scans can be done in Dumaguete...is that true? If so, that would be a good sign...

I've only been treated a couple times for minor diving related problems over my many years of traveling to the Philippines. Once in Manila and that was fine. Once in Bacolod and that wasn't so wonderful. Anyway, I suspect all the best people are being poached to work overseas....who can blame them..

Silliman Medical Center is gearing up to be one of the best medical centers outside Metro Manila as it is preparing to enter the field of medical tourism. I heard at least a couple of entities here want to put up their medical tourism facilties as well.

Silliman Medical Center is comparable to hospitals in big cities such as Cebu. Even the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital has advanced equipment.

My wife worked as a Nurse in Holy Child Hospital, its quite good, my other thread on this forum is about health, but the biggest thing is the cost, when its not free, many doctors are driven by commercialism, they tend to "suggest" tests which cost money "just to check" you. bit like the dentists, they do not like filling teeth, they like to take them out so they can make and charge you with false teeth! So this topic is tricky, glad someone brought it up other than me. there is "medicare" but how good it is I do not know. Anyway for normal Filipinos the cost of health treatment is outrageous. go into any Pharmacy and look at the people waiting to buy medicine, what do you see? happy Filipino smiling faces that you have come to know??..NO! everyone is looking glum! cos they have to pay money, that a lot have begged or borrowed from relatives, friends, or anyone else, its a scandal.
Also I have learnt that some people sell cheap drugs etc from church organisations...hmm I wonder if they are selling what is supposed to be charitable stuff????

Talking of which go to Sibulan market and check out the "mountains" of clothes that people sell...that is charitable clothes also!!
