Just want to share this with you. This spinner dolphin, spp Stenella longirostris, was found dead off the shores of Guihulngan, Negros Oriental (read, some 109 kilometers north of Dumaguete). Another dead spinner dolphin was also beached in Ayungon town, also in northern Neg. Or. Authorities believe these were by-catch by commercial fishing vessels operating in the Tanon Strait, a protected seascape. At least ten species of dolphins are found in Negros Oriental, and Bais City is famous for its dolphin and whale watching tours. Authorities admit the need to strengthen measures against accidental catch, a leading cause of death of marine mammals. :(
