hep a or b shots?

    oops let me try this again as im new to the forum. im going to be in dumaguete for nine days. will i need hep a or b shots?

    That depends what you are planning to do!

    Hep B is generally transferred by body fluids, blood etc so it can be contracted by unprotected intercourse.
    Hep A can be transmitted in food as far as I am aware food handlers are not routinely tested for this in the Phils.

    So you probably need shots for Hep A

    Summary of recommendations:

    All travelers should visit either their personal physician or a travel health clinic 4-8 weeks before departure.
    Malaria: Prophylaxis with Lariam, Malarone, or doxycycline is recommended for all rural areas below 600 m (1969 ft), except on Bohol Island, Borocay Island, Catanduanes Island, and Cebu Island. Subic Bay is a risk area.
    Vaccinations:

    Hepatitis A


    Recommended for all travelers

    Typhoid


    For travelers who may eat or drink outside major restaurants and hotels

    Yellow fever


    Required for all travelers greater than one year of age arriving from a yellow-fever-infected area in Africa or the Americas. Not recommended otherwise.

    Japanese encephalitis


    For long-term (>1 month) travelers to rural areas or travelers who may engage in extensive unprotected outdoor activities in rural areas, especially after dusk

    Hepatitis B


    For travelers who may have intimate contact with local residents, especially if visiting for more than 6 months

    Rabies


    For travelers who may have direct contact with animals and may not have access to medical care

    Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)


    Two doses recommended for all travelers born after 1956, if not previously given

    Tetanus-diphtheria


    Revaccination recommended every 10 years

    If you're planning to visit remoter areas/hinterlands in Oriental or Occidental, Cholera might be a good idea too.

    wow thanks coyotes that is very informative ive printed a copy of this to take to my doctor. you folks shure are nice and helpful on this site except for a couple that always seem to be grouchy with there lives. once again thanks.

    Hi California-jac,
    My suggestion is to get both, better be safe than sorry. Also, donot forget to pack mosquito repellent. Have a pleasant trip.
