Be interesting to see how this social experiment works out.

When I was there a couple of years ago, the island seemed to be dominated by Koreans, not Chinese.

Edit: Just read the whole article.
For Boracay, 375,284 Chinese tourists visited last year, almost 30 times more than a decade ago. Chinese visitors outpaced South Koreans to the island last year.

    Things are a changing.

    So in your link:

" the Macau-based Galaxy Entertainment Group, including its founder Lui Che-woo, met Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte last December to wow him with their vision of a US$500 million integrated casino resort"

Are you suggesting the Chinese made him an offer he could not refuse? I have been thinking along the same lines. We shall have to see how many structures are conveniently torn down and what replaces them. Of course there will be a "logical" explanation to follow.

Do you think Boracay is clean and that a lot of business's are not infact dumping their sewage directly into the ocean? Also when was the last time you've been there to see and did you get around most of the island and beaches?

That would be what I would be wondering. If infact what he said is true on sewage and so forth then I'd agree with him. If its nonsense and Boracay is very clean then I'd disagree. Knowing the Philippine mentality I would tend to side with Duterte's comments on this when no first hand experience.

So would I. His comments were:

He has not commented on what these illegal structures will be replaced with but the opening post in this thread is as good a guess as any. Also, if the aim is to tear down the illegal structures, why does he need to keep people away while he does this? We cannot know the thoughts behind his comments but his is basically saying: Tear down a lot of "illegal structures" and "clean the place up" right after meeting with the Chinese businessmen who are offering a huge amount of money to locate there.

Doesn't that make you even a little suspicious that he wants to clear out a spot for the Chinese casinos away from prying eyes?

Exactly, knowing the Philippines...Duterte should shut down the entire country until it is cleaned up. Boracay was far cleaner than many of the other areas I have been to....especially Manila. Why isn't he shutting down the entire NCR? It's a freakin' cesspool of human waste and filth.

About 4 years ago. The problem wasn't the trash, it was Koreans and Chinese. Worst tourists I have ever ran across. Very happy I don't speak Korean or Chinese or I would likely be even more annoyed by them.

And they have been doing exactly that in Manila without closing it down. I would question if he even has the authority to shut down an entire island. Of course Filipino politicians have absolutely no balls to question anything he is doing.

I wonder what sort of repercussions he may face from Travel Agents losing Bookings (Not that I would think he will be bothered about it but.....:hmmm:) As I often say to her indoors, Every action has a Reaction/ consequence :yup: Having said that I bet the BIR will not be too happy either, all lost revenue. I daresay even the ferry Companies will feel the Pinch :pompus: Surely it can only end in tears  except for Him and his new Friends :bag:

Interesting read on this matter, who owns Boracay...

    Boracay wholly state-owned — 2008 Supreme Court ruling | Philstar.com

I wonder why after WWII the hong kong chinese came to the philippines as helper and the last 40 years it is vice versa... and hong kong is amongst the richest city in the world. Maybe the unbelievable bad climate to invest and do business in this country? And the open arms for international investors in hong kong...

On the world stage, I would guess the repercussions will be significantly less then running around and indiscriminately killing suspected drug dealers. Do Travel Agents have a lot of clout in the Philippines? :whistling:

Seems there's at least one on every corner. (I always wondered how they all stayed in business.) Do they have a union?
