Been thinking along similar lines since Duterte started to go nuts in Boracay. Wondering if the people will still support him; and if not is there going to be civil unrest? Duterte did say he is sending troops to Boracay for at least 6 months. Is more martial law coming? Is anyone else thinking of leaving Philippines for a while until the "sh*t settles"? Trouble is, many of us have tended to accumulate a lot of "things" like house, car, motorcycles.

Much has been written about being able to live here on a small budget but if there is no one left here to buy all those "things" then some of us would have a helluva time relocating with little money and none of the things we purchased over the last decade.

Could be interesting times. But I'm not panicking, just idly thinking about back up plans if things get nuts here, and wondering what other people's thoughts are. Might turn out to be time to go back to work for a year and leave things in storage. D*mn I hate that work work.

Storage? Is there a storage facility in the area for a household of stuff?

Perhaps I should have phrased that better. Having a house would mean locking up the place with all the stuff "stored" inside and the bikes and car "stored" in the carport. Then hope that the neighbors are as nice in the future as they have been until now.

Always prudent to have a back up plan. I was reading an article about troops in Boracay. Overkill? Cops, soldiers escorting DENR personnel in Boracay crackdown While I rarely accept anything at face value I would say the explanation is reasonable. What the article didn't say but I thought might also be a reason, is to discourage the DENR from taking bribes.

It is credible that could happen.

If this Boracay fiasco is only about sewage then there should be zero unemployment as EVERYONE should be put to work getting it done asap. And yet I read how many people will be out of work. Hmmmmm.

First off I'll just mention my desire to find someplace else is mostly a change of scenery and boredom with the Philippines and its issues. Not really an anti Duterte thing (I like he's trying to do things while some things I disagree with) but more of wanting a change up.

Catch is just how to relocate. If you don't own a house then you sell or give stuff away but maybe have a tight budget. But what other countries to go to you can stay like you do in the Philippines and for those of us who have a Filipina wife or serious GF and maybe even kids it gets even harder. I've been looking for that golden ticket where I could bring my fiancee and kid along with myself at 38 years old to live in Thailand or some other cheap but relatively safe country. For many of us its just not possible/allowed.

    I don't know.
Storage? ...see, there could be a big need for my "Dumaguete U-Stor-It" business idea. Too bad I'm too smart and/or lazy to build one. All this talk makes me so glad I've listened to Henry's old video where he said; " RENT, Don't Buy", regarding land/houses here.

Duterte's just trying to clean the place up....Boracay is the Jewel in the crown, and lazy developers are wrecking it. Well done Mr. President.

Luckily I rent and don't have any financial restrictions. It would only take me a couple weeks to get back there and sell all my things and then take a sledgehammer to anything that I couldn't get a decent price for. I've also been traveling around looking for other locations.

This question has been asked several times on the forum. No such business exists near Dumaguete. If you hear of one please let me know...I've been practicing.

I certainly don't know all the background or facts about what is going on there, but I do know Boracay has consistently been rated as one of the top destination islands. But it recently has developed serious problems which I'm sure we all know, and it seems to me the situation got to the point where something drastic needed to be done. Now, I don't know if the way Duterte is handling it is the right way or not, for awhile it seemed very suspicious the deals that were being made with the Chinese casino developers, but now it seems that is not going to happen. It also seemed clear that the local population and businesses had no intention of dealing with the problems, and so Duterte stepped in with his authoritarian style. Now, in six months if Boracay reopens with cleaned up businesses and beaches and is better than ever, then maybe the end justifies the means in this case. It's going to take time to see what the results and true motivations are. But in any case, I think that it is still a pretty big leap to go from what is happening in Boracay to the idea that it is now time to "bug out". In the end this could turn out to be a good thing both for Boracay and for the property values in the surrounding islands.
