Kerala has mesmerized all the tourists visiting Kerala. Its evergreen beauty, varied species of animals and birds and sprawling waterbodies are some among its greatest attractions.

A place that is one of Kerala’s greatest attractions is the village of Kumarakom, which is situated 16 kms away from Kottayam town. It is basically a cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake and is a part of the Kuttanad region. This place houses a sanctuary spread across 14 acres and is a favorite spot of migratory birds and is also an ornithologist’s paradise. The common birds seen here are egrets, darters, herons, teals, waterfowls, cuckoo, and wild duck. Migratory birds like the Siberian Stork visit the sanctuary in flocks and are a treat to watch. Kumarakom is an enchanting backwater destination and has always fascinated the visitors. It is the best place to enjoy a leisure holiday and has many facilities such as boating, fishing etc. Independent cottages are built on stilts by Waterscapes, the backwater resort of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. The cottages offer beautiful view of the backwaters and lovely coconut grooves. Kerala tourism offers a number of packages that suit travelers on vacation, honeymoon couples etc. There are also packages that provide the visitors with an unforgettable experience involving houseboats or the traditional Kettuvalloms. Tourists can also catch a glimpse of the shimmering water, the brilliant green of the mangrove trees, coconut palms lining the embankments, the clear blue sky and the flocks of migratory birds skimming water. Kumarakom enjoys the maximum length and breadth of the Vembanad Lake which is about eight kms. It has secured an important place in God’s Own Country.
