It also happened under Aquino before Duterte took office. One of the salient quotes is

"Within weeks of Mr Berg's arrest, reports surfaced of mass extra-judicial killings of suspected drug dealer and drug users by police and vigilante gangs."

The trial which took place under the Duterte administration cleared Mr. Berg on the basis of CCTV video. Unlike in the Ellah Joy Pique murder case where CCTV footage that proved innocence was largely ignored, but that was under the Aquino administration. I think Mr. Berg got a fairer shake under the Duterte administration. Here is a link to a different report.

Aussie man tells of Philippine drug war

A Canadian man Jeremy Eaton went with police to Berg's hotel room and also testified "testi-lied" at trial.

"Police alleged Mr Berg - who worked as the commercial manager for engineering company First Balfour in the Philippines - was caught in a street buy-bust operation selling 50 ecstasy tablets to Canadian man Jeremy Eaton on the night of June 20 in Makati City.

What CCTV showed was that Mr Berg was not arrested in a sting on the street but at the nearby Red Planet Hotel, where police stormed into his room, guns drawn, while he was working."

The police did not randomly pick Mr. Berg, Jeremy Eaton picked Mr. Berg.

After the arrest the police do what they regularly do, lie to improve their case and I doubt there is any country where that doesn't happen.

Be aware that crap happens and you don't just have to worry about who you associate with but who your partner associates with.

"Damian Berg is still unsure why the police targeted him, but suspects he may have been set up by an ex-partner of his girlfriend."
