So, I happened to see this months edition of Islands Magazine at the grocery store. This month, they're listing the top 20 islands in the world to live on. And Negros Oriental made that list !

Here's an example of others making the list.

    Penang Malaysia
    Utila, Honduras
    Pico, Azores, Portugal
    Aruba
    Vanuatu

Unfortunately, you have to subscribe to read the article- Islands - July/Aug 2007

Looks like the word is getting out!

How can I get a copy? Are they selling that magazine in one of the newsstands in the locality?

    Tom,
No, I don't subscribe to it. I did buy it, more as a souvenir than anything. At 5 bucks, i think that was too much. A subscription is not worthwhile, at least for me. It mostly has advertisements for the high-end beach resorts, condos, etc.

They picked the 20 best places and listed them in no particular order. They were rated on weather (they call it the flip-flop quotient, number of days you can wear flip-flops), number of expats, cost of housing, ease of imigration, ease of getting there, and the price of the local beer. Not very scientific, and quite subjective. But I found it informative.

    Echir,
I picked it up in the states, not sure if it would be available locally. Try the NBS, that's the only place i think would have it. But don't worry if you can't find a copy, your not missing anything. It's just a very short paragraph about Negros.

    Some other islands listed:

    Dominica
    St Kitts
Hawkes Bay, North Island, New Zealand
    Taveuni, Fiji
    Long Island, Bahamas
    Big Island, Hawaii
    Cedar Key Florida, USA
    Isla Colon, Panama
    Grand Cayman
    Gozo, Malta
    Carriacou, Grenada
    Vieques, Puerto Rico
    Norfolk Island
Union Island, St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Although it mentioned Negros Oriental, the review actually zeroed in on Duma. Weather factor is 3 because of typhoon/seasonal weather; Expats to locale 1: 1,000; City population is 102,265 with 90% speak English; Ease on immigration is moderate.

The magazine also mentioned "a city with many universities and seaside promenade lined with cafes and art galleries. The magazine interviewed George Bender, from Germany who works for Atlantis Dive Resort.

With this exposure, many people will be goggling Duma and probably logging in to this forum. We better be in our best behavior
