In this year's Best Countries Overall ranking, the Philippines has slid down from #43 in 2017 to #49. See https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/overall-full-list. Yet, unexpectedly, it has been subranked #1 as “Best Country to Invest In” by the US News & World Report for Best Countries. See https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/invest-in-full-list In terms of other indicators, this is how the Philippines is subranked: 1. #16 in list of Best Countries for Adventure; 2. #27 in list of Best Countries for Comfortable Retirement at https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/comfortable-retirement-full-list 3. #34 list of Best Countries for Movers; 4. #34 in list of Best Countries Open for Business; 5. #35 in list of Best Countries for Power; 6. #37 in list of Best Countries for Quality of life at https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/quality-of-life-full-list 7. #41 in list of Best Countries for Cultural Influence; 8. #45 in list of Best Countries for Entrepreneurship; 9. #47 in list of Best Countriees for Heritage; 10. #55 in list of Best Countries for Citizenship; and 11. #55 in list of Best Countries for Education at https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/education-full-list All country subrankings are summarized by indicators at https://media.beam.usnews.com/ce/e7...1110-best-countries-overall-rankings-2018.pdf Best Countries is a project study for ranking countries according to global perception whereby 80 countries are "evaluated across 24 rankings drawn from a survey of more than 21,000 global citizens, measuring 75 dimensions that have the potential to drive trade, travel and investment and directly affect national economies."
U.S. News & World Report is an American media company that publishes news, opinion, consumer advice, rankings, and analysis. Can it be scam? Maybe not. The reputational ranking system by U.S. News is contrasted with or taken as alternative to the rankings of Washington Monthly - a bimonthly nonprofit magazine of US politics and government based in Washington, D.C. - and the rankings of Forbes - an American bi-weekly business magazine that features original articles on finance, industry, investing, and marketing.
Until the Philippines opens up equal opportunity for foreigners, (especially those who make the effort to settle here and become fulltime Residents of this country) like the US and Australia, where Filipino's can go to and freely invest in Land, Housing and Businesses (without the need to be a Citizen of those two countries) then I feel that the Philippines is very one sided and for the most; therefore is not a great place to invest. I am only investing here for my Wife and Daughter to benefit from, and fully realise that as a foreigner, I will have next to zero rights here as an investor to this country, and will most likely see a likewise return on my efforts as such. I seriously doubt that the many who would plan to invest money here, to actually make money from their ventures, will see it as I do, so will go elsewhere, like the US or Australia for instance, where they can invest and actually see return on their investments. In this instance; I am not...
They also need to improve their judicial system. Contracts in Filipino culture mean jack sh*t. Fighting a corrupt a-hole in the Philippines who screwed you over can take decades to get through the courts and victims of any type of crime can become a victim again to the court's corruption quite easily. There are also very few sectors where a foreigner can own a controlling share in their investment. The Philippines is NOT, and likely never will be, the #1 country in the world to invest in.
I concur, I've brought my partner and her two girls here to NZ and turned them into citizens, they have taken advantage of our education system and all have done well and have well paying jobs now, they use our health system etc etc, on the flipside what do I get in the Phils. for paying for a lot and building a place and spending my hard earned ? nothing but hassles, visa hassle, can't own the lot, partner can't get a divorce, and on it goes, there's some 40k Filipinos here in NZ getting a fair go, they should show some goodwill and give us a fair go there.
If everyone was treated fair in the Philippines then it would not be fair. It would be like LeBron James going back to play high school basketball.
In that study, Filipinos with unclean educational conditions manage to score a country average IQ of 86 with global rank of #21 even as Thais manage to score 91 with global rank of #18 while Americans with immaculate educational conditions score a country average of 98 with global rank of #9. It is humbling. Yet being very near the median score or the mean seems a happy place than veering off the normal toward the low or high extremes. I suppose it is because we are less intelligent that we cling to and do not welcome changes to the civil rights and interests vested in us since 1889. In that case, average intelligence is happiness indeed!
Immaculate education conditions? The US is "#1" in very few categories these days. Mostly due to the Baby Boomers screwing up what their parents and grandparents, the "Silent Generation" and the "G.I. Generation", built. Not exactly sure what you are getting at there.
