    Hi all,

I'm thinking about applying to the marine biology program at Silliman University for the second semester which starts in October. Does anyone have any insight about the program? Thanks!

It's the BEST MARINE BIOLOGY PROGRAM in the Philippines.... [I'm a biology graduate [Graduate Program] of De La Salle University - Manila].

As a student of the program, you will have all the opportunity of working with the experts in the actual field not only in the Philippines but also worldwide!

The laboratory is complete with latest equipment, amenities, and materials plus 2 sanctuary islands [Sumilon and Apo Islands]. Supported by the USAID, your facilities are connected to the whole world. Faculty members are the experts in the field.

The Marine Biology Program is, of course, the CHED's Center of Development!

The Marine Biology Program is inclined towards conserving the marine resources [all marine organisms including its aquatic ecology]! I took a course on Ichthiology [a study of marine fishes] at the De La Salle University - Manila under Dr. Gonzales of the UP Marine Institute.

Consider Australia instead. We offer degrees that are definitely recognized world-wide. I personally work in this area:

Agriculture & Environment - Environmental & Aquatic Sciences

And we offer a degree in:

Coastal Zone Management degree: Curtin University of Technology

    Entrance qualifications are here:

Agriculture and Environment degree: Curtin University of Technology

It's not cheap...but international students are allowed to work, part-time while studying and full-time during breaks - which helps a lot with costs :

    http://www.immi.gov.au/students/_pdf/permission-to-work-students.pdf

Being Australia, you're aren't working for slave wages and tips. Most jobs that students do here pay $15-20 an hour (ie retail, restaurants, etc). Economy here is going pretty well...still. And students who want to work...find it. Not knocking Silliman - but our degree offers world-wide respect and opportunities. In a very safe, friendly, positive environment among real international experts - and superb lab and field facilities. And we have a great many happy international students...including Americans..studying here.

Well, the Marine Biology Program and Coastal Resource Management Program of Silliman University including researches undertaken, mostly award-winners on these fields, the faculty and facilities/ fish sanctuary islands are of global distinctions! And the laboratory facilities including rare specimen collections and conservation programs attract both local and international visitors and tourists!

No wonder the USAid has made SU as its Center of Excellence in Coastal Resource Management and many respected marine laboratories worldwide including those in Australia have collaborative researches in these aspects with SU!

Dumaguete City, known as the "City of Gentle People" and where SU is located is considered student-haven which later on described as a "University Town" because it is conducive to learning, culturally enriched, and very safe. In fairness, the standard of living in the city is extremely low compared to the standard of living in Australia according to my Australian classmates during my student days in Silliman.

According to Ms. Tina Rey: "The website is not helpful at all and no one is getting back to me about my inquiries! Can anyone give me any info about graduate admissions for this program please?! Thank you so much."

Please browse Silliman University, Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros, Philippines and open Academic Programs [Institute of Environmental & Marine Sciences, SUAKCREM, and Academic Units - Arts & Sciences]. You can likewise make a virtual tour of SU and laboratory.

I recommend that you also open the General Information and read our "Code of Christian Collegiality." Please read our Student Handbook in Student Services.

Hey, I also find the website confusing and not helpful. I'm planning to apply for the master of science in marine biology as well, but the website doesn't contain the information I need. I'm currently a student at De La Salle Manila. I'll be finishing my degree next year and I'm planning to apply for the school year 2011. What are the requirements and all? Also, I'm not a biology major, but an education major. I took botany, zoology and anatomy by the way in preparation for the MS degree, do you think that's enough? Hope to hear positive responses from you.

    Admissions

I actually called the registrar office a couple months ago asking for the admission requirements and finally mailed everything yesterday! You'll need to submit a completed admissions form for the school and the program, a written description of your goals and such (personal statement), two recommendation laters, transcripts, copy of birth certificate, and a 2x2 passport photo. You'll also need a physical exam but I was planning on getting that done before classes start.

wow that was a quick reply, thank you
Can you please send me the e-mail containing all the requirements. sorry :( and thank you in advance. I'm really, really interested in the program. My e-mail ad is ringodire@yahoo.com thank you so much.

By the way where do i get the admission form? Also do i have to go to the university personally to submit the requirements? Is there a deadline for it? you see, I have never been to Dumaguete :(

Sorry for the trouble and may God bless you

@Vampire828: Animo La Salle! Well, at the SU website: Silliman University, Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros, Philippines, you can click admission and go through it. The admission form there is intended for in-coming college students; not for prospective graduate students. You can write the Admission Office and request for the form.

But I suggest, you go to Silliman University in Dumaguete, the City of the Gentle People. And try to feel its atmosphere. Visit its USAid Laboratory Facility which is the lone Center of Excellence in Coastal Resource Management in the country! You can see its extensive collections, studies in Marine Biology in collaboration with various experts worldwide and even with local experts but of international calibers like Dr. Angel Alcala, and various marine conservation projects being undertaken. You can also visit its marine sanctuary islands [Sumilon and Apo], all best diving sites! I'm sure, you'll enjoy your stay there!
