I learned today of the death of Sir Jimmy Saville at his home in Leeds, UK, at the age of 84. Always flamboyant, often controversial, and always with his trade mark gigantic cigar and tinted glasses, he was one of the architects of music promotion in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. For many years he had been a fund raiser for various charities, raising more than £20 million, much of it for the spinal injuries unit at Stoke Mandeville, and he ran more than 200 marathons in pursuit of this fund raising. It was for this work that he was Knighted by Her Majesty. He also worked tirelessly and voluntarily as a porter at Leeds hospital, and helped many unfortunate children, some with terminal illnesses, by bringing some sunshine in to their lives with his extraordinary generosity. RIP Sir Jim. The world has lost a very colourful character. Roger
Yes indeed Broadside, he was a great guy, I was lucky to meet him in the 60,s at a ballroom in Liverpool. They were filming "Ferry across the Mersey" some of the Liverpool lesser known bands were also there. Swinging Blue Jeans ,Four Jays later known as the Fourmosts, and Liverpools own Cilla Black. Sir Jim played himself as a DJ. Great Days, Great Guy, Jimmy Saville R I P..........JB ( remember the TV progamme "JIm will fix it" brought happiness to lot's of unsuspecting people.)
Glad that Sir JIM is remembed on the other side of my world I never met him,but remember he was famous for his marathan charity runs he raised 40 million pounds in total, giving like broadside said 20 million to Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Glad to have lived in his era. RIP Jim lets hope theres somebody up there that will Fix it for you! Stilo
