As sailing ,dinghies is a passion of mine,I was wondering if anyone knows where I can hire one in the Dumaguete area?
I appreciate this is a difficult question.

    Hello ENIGMA,

I can't answer that but would love to learn to sail, what a great place to learn.

If I find some were, will let you know.

    Jim.

Thanks Jim,sailing is a very relaxing, rewarding pastime. It's easy to learn,I've been sailing since I was a kid.I'm surprised that Filopinoe's don't sail.I've only seen one pump boat with a sail all the time I've been in the Philippines.
    Anymore sailors out there?

for whatever reason not in the Duma Area, there is quite a nice community in Luzon and Mindoro, also some in Cebu.

Try and track down Mark Higgins, a burly Englishman I'd say in his 40s. He hangs out at the Coco Amigos on the Blvd. Ask him what happened to his Catmaran he had at his resort a couple of years ago. I too am very surprised not to see any sailboats in the area. What exactly are you looking for by the way ? A centerboard ? A Keelboat ?

By the way, let me hear if you find one, especially a small centerboard...16 feet would be ideal. I too really enjoy sailing.

Hi chuck, thanks for reply. This time I was looking for just a small sailing dinghy to hire but that dosen't seem possible,in this area.In the future I think the only way to obtain a small sailing boat ,say 18 to 20 footer with a cabin and road trailer, is to purchase it in the UK for around 2000 pound. Then to ship it over in a container.Probably a bilge keel would be the most convenient. The advantage of this size boat is that,it can be stored on dry land easily and conveniently, away from theft and storms when not in use.
I will certainly try to track down Mark Higgins, when I visit in March 08.

Thanks for post,Rhoody shame there's no sailing community in Duma' maybe I should start one?

    Hi ENIGMA,
you can have a boat built in Visayas even IN Dumaguete.
Andy Smith I think hes called located in Bohol google his name.
theres a yacht harbor South of Zambo, Siation. if you ask around might find something.
heres a link for the rest of sailing in RP
Philippine Yacht Clubs and sailing venues

    Cheers. Bon voyage.
    Jim.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are high tariffs on bringing small craft into the Phippines to protect their wooden boat builders. I wonder about this because I've seen so few fiberglass boats or boats of foreign origin plying the waters. I haven't gotten down to the docks in Cebu though. Definately do some research on that before you ship one I'd say. None of it makes sense to me unless high tarriffs are the case.

I will certainly look in to that Chuck but I shall be very surprised if there is a tariff on importing a small boat for personal use.I think there is just no call for them in the Philippines. The filopinoe's are just contented to use their pump boats
and the idea of sailing for pleasure,I don't think comes into their vocabulary.I've never seen a caravan or motorhome in the Philippines, also. Here in the UK,you see them everywhere clogging up the roads ,Bank holidays and in the summer.
