    No issue with that but I've had problems with my globe IP address and accessing this website. Have to use my VPN to open this Site.

    What's the purpose they said for turning off the Java?

    @joseph,

    Late with this reply but I just joined the forum. Disabling Java plug-ins is fine, but it should be kept updated also. If it's needed for anything, you want the latest versions with all patches. They don't fix it all, but they do fix some things.

    The latest Firefox and Chrome browsers should keep plug-ins disabled by default, except Flash. If you go to a page where they are needed they will prompt you to enable them for that one instance.

    Keeping your system, including browsers, up to date. One exception: Microsoft is pushing Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 through updates. We advise our clients to wait, since it still has many bugs.

    Note to Mac users: You are not safe from Java exploits. Computers at Apple were hacked, and the ones hacked at Microsoft were Macs.

    Don't know of a java bug that would place an icon on the screen. Is the icon on the right side on the task bar? Maybe it's the Java updater nagging you to update. Because of the late problems, Java seems to put out an update every few days. Can you attach a screenshot? The updater can be disabled without affecting the program.

    A lot of bad info is been passed around about Java. For most PC users, Java is not needed. For some online apps and online games it may be required, but not for much else. If a website needs Java, it will tell you and usually provide a link for downloading it.

    I have 5 copies of Windows. Only one has Java and that is for testing purposes. Other than that, I don't need it. I've only used it twice in the last month. Working on customers' PCs I needed to find graphics drivers for nVidia and it's easier to let nVidia scan the system and provide the proper driver. For that it needed Java. Once finished, I disabled Java on those PCs.

    If you do use Java, it's better to keep doing the updates. As more bugs surface, more are taken care of, and using an old version will expose your PC that much more.

    Hi, yes the icon was next to the time and date, bottom right of the screen.
    It kept asking me to update it every 10 minutes or so, then when I tried to update, windows says I have the latest.
    So I uninstalled Java, then re- installed. The icon's gone and so has the pesky updates.

    @jimeve
    Ok. That will do until the next update.:smile:

    If you want to stop the updater from nagging, you can disable it in control panel: control panel>Java>update. Uncheck "update automatically." "Apply" and "OK." Done. If you can't find Java in control panel, change "view" to large icons. See attachment below.

    You'll have to check for updates manually. Can be done in the same panel or go to Oracle Java test webpage where it's will tell you what version you have and update it if you want.

    Cheers,

    Yolly
