Unusually blue river at Brgy Casiple, Dauin

Whereas Surigao del Sur has a crystal-clear blue stretch of deep saltwater that springs forth from jungle ground into the sea at Hinatuan Enchanted River, Negros Oriental now has unusually blue waters at Masaplod River in Dauin.

Mayor Neil Credo reportedly looked into what could be happening underneath Dauin's earth surface to allay fears for human safety. He called the local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC), the NORSU Dept of Physics & Geology, the SU Chemistry Dept, and Phivolcs to study the “blue water phenomenon” at Masaplod River and also to study the "increased steam vent activity" in Mag-aso Cave that occurred following the series of earthquakes in Cuernos de Negros at nearby Valencia town last month.

Geophysical measurements, samples, and temperatures have been obtained but it may take weeks yet to obtain study results from the experts at Phivolcs. “What is certain for now is that the cause of the occurrence of the so-called blue river phenomenon is a kind of volcanic activity happening in Cuernos de Negros which is just normal for a potentially active volcano,” one SU professor said.

 

Will be interesting to hear the results of these tests.
