Sibulan Update to fire thread

A while ago someone mentioned a fire at Twin Lakes. Here is the newspaper report

DUMAGUETE CITY -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) announced no damage was done following a grassfire that razed across the foothills of Mt. Guintabon in Sibulan, Negros Oriental.

PDRRMC Officer Adrian Sedillo said a fire-out was declared late afternoon Friday, a day after the wildfire was reported at the foothills of Mt. Guintabon which sparked public concern.

Sedillo said fortunately there was no damage as it was only a grassfire but it could endanger the nearby reforestation area.

Members of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) of Balinsasayao Twin Lakes expressed their gratitude to the different concerned agencies who helped in controlling the grassfire.

Apolinario Cariňo, a member of the PAMB Balinsasayao Twin Lakes said the affected part was just at the foothills of Mt. Guintabon dome near the main entrance of the Park.

He was thankful to the immediate response of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, PDRRMC, the Energy Development Corporation, (EDC), local government units (LGUs) concerned and members of PAMB and volunteers who helped in controlling the spread of the fire.

Early investigation showed the grassfire started at around 2 p.m. last Thursday.

The president of Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Farmers Association, Rico Mier, said they were afraid they could not control the fire considering the dryness of the grass and dried leaves.

Cariňo said the farmers’ association expressed fear since the ember might trigger another fire that would endanger the reforestation project near the grassfire as the knee height dried leaves of mangium and mahogany trees planted along these slopes were detrimental to starting up a new fire in the area.

The leaves of these exotic trees prove that their leaves do not decompose easily compared to the native species of trees, he noted.

He was hoping that the wildfire at Guintabon should serve as a lesson to concerned agencies not to plant exotic or invasive trees for reforestation projects.

Putting out "forest" (jungle) fires actually makes future fires more severe. It sucks for the people who live in and around those areas but since the Philippine government has absolutely no foresight (or resources) which would tell/allow them to do controlled burns like areas in the north western US, it's best just to let them burn out naturally IMO.
