I plan to leave for the Philippines on Sept 6 or 7 permanently. I have in advance should I go to the VA Clinic in Houston and make arrangements to have my records transferred to Manila?

Do you have the new VA id card and currently registered with the VA. If you have not done so yet I would have your id associated to an account on the myhealtheVet web site My HealtheVet - The Gateway to Veteran Health and Wellness. While you do not get access to your actual records you can manually keep track of your visits and exams and order perscription refills. There are also links to the worldwide network of VA clinics with their contact info.

If you are in the VA system I would ask the local office if the Manila clinic will have access to your records. They probably do not deal in physical records anymore but it would not hurt to ask and become informed on what to expect. We need to get some of our Pinoy veteran brothers to chime in here since I would bet they are the biggest users of the clinic but until they do we are the pilgrams here.

I moved from kentucky to virginia to arizona to hawaii in the time that I've been a service connected veteran and every time I visited my then current doctor and admin Va rep to forward and also to the new doctor and office and both sides seem to be able to initiate the move but i inform and request both sides anyway....My move to philippines:I did not transfer my records but just registered here because I prefer if my needs are serious enough for records that I need to go back to USA for better care...Your conditions may require your own decision...Cool and good luck...

Hi! Yes I am already registered with the VA in Houston. I also have access to MyHealthevet.com I'm probably going to have to go to eligibility in Houston and see if Manila can get access to my records. I suppose I am still going to have to register with VA Manila after I arrive. I currently get all of my medication including non-service connected medication thru the VA in Houston. My main concern is being able to continue receiving my medication such as Insulin.

Oh remember that the manila VA office POLICY only extends services to service connected rated veterans because its a compromise installation (not in america )so it offers compromised services.... IF YOU ARE NOT SERVICE CONNECTED YOU MAY NOT GET PROVIDED FOR UNLESS SPECIAL INTERVENENTION IS GRANTED BUT BE SURE TO AFFIRM ALL THESE MATTERS BEFORE LEAVING HOUSTON....

Hi! I am 40% service connected for PTSD (30%) and Tinnitus (10%). I currently receive all of my meds thru the VA in Houston including non-service connected med such as insulin, etc. I read somewhere that if I am receiving my meds thru the via that Manila will continue to provide my meds for non-service connected. I am aware that Manila will not provide services in their clinic for non-service connected. I need to clarify the non-service connected med issue with eligibility.

I am insulin dependant and my diabeties is NOT service connected and the VA Manila provides me with all my supplies and Meds for my diabeties. They even gave me a new glucometer because I couldnt get the test strips for my San Antonio supplied meter. They are very very helpful and they wont take away what I was [reviously recieving. Just make sure you know your rights. YOU earned them!

As for medical attention due to my diabeties, they do provide appointments but they do not have a specialist, just a GP. In San Antonio I had an Internist taking care of me, here... not so. But they do the checks, blood tests, feet checks, provide antibiotics and wound care for any cuts on the feet. They are doing an okay job. If I need more help Andersen AFB is about 3 hours away.

Relayer, Thank you so much for your reply. I was able to read on another forum that I would be able to get my insulin, etc from Manila. Your information supports what I was able to find out. It makes me feel so much better about my pending relocation. I was feeling a bit uncomfortable because twice I emailed Manila and have yet to receive a response. I will stop by the Houston VA and let them know what is going on. I am not sure if I should go directly to VA Manila when I arrive and notify them regarding my new status. Thanks again for your response.

Good. Also I checked the price for Lantus at the local pharmacy and it was 2500php. I go through one of those every two weeks so the cost savings provided by the vA is awesome as well.

Having spent my youth abusing my body for the US government I never knew or really thought about the benefits of retirement. Now that I am at my grand old age I may have made the right choice by staying in the Air Force. It dont suck now! lol

I hear you! I was in the Army for 8 years and do not regret having served my country. It's comforting to know that I can look forward to my retirement in the Philippines and not have to worry about my medication.
