Just a warning to all the DI readers out there...the elections are coming so the shakedowns, I mean Checkpoints, have started. I have noticed they like the area just South of Robinson's (near the front entrance to Don Bosco).

If you pass through one, expect it to cost you money. If you drive a car and are a foreigner expect it to cost you A LOT of money.

Anyone noticed any other favorite locations?

It is also normally done in any city limits/boundaries (applies for municipal limits, too!).

    Why does it cost money?

I see checkpoints quite often and got snagged in one of them. Weena was driving and I noticed out of the corner of my eye a guy with an M-16 running close behind me and even tapped me on the shoulder. That was a bit disconcerting.

After pulling over a few traffic police joined the group and every one of them asked if I was driving. I'm sure they were greatly disappointed to find that I wasn't. Weena said they were trying to hint at a bribe anyways, but she told them that I was just along for the ride and wouldn't be paying.

Weena's motorcycle actually has a number of legit violations and it was impounded. We didn't have to pay much to get it out though, Weena has friends. :D

VEry often these "choke points" are there to apprehend unregistered motorcycles. There are a lot of those plying the city streets so you can just imagine how much money is deprived the government because of these unregistered vehicles.
