I bought a reasonably nice Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime phone. It runs Marshmallow 6.0.1 and the only problem I had with it was that it comes with only 8 GB of memory and most of that is already used up by the system.

No problem, I thinks, I read on the Internet that I can buy a 32 GB SD card and Marshmallow allows me to set the SD card as the primary internal storage.

Wrong. Samsung has blocked that feature of Marshmallow for some reason. It is so bad that it is almost impossible to load any apps and the SD card is useless except for storing music and vids and pics. Seriously, loading FB and Messenger just about filled the 8 GB of ram.

So I want to get the phone rooted and have REAL Marshmallow 6.0.1 that will allow me to use the SD card as primary internal storage.

A: Can it be done and
    B: Who can do it?

Not 100% sure, but there is a phone store next to CD-R King at Robinson's Mall and their technicians are pretty good, you might ask them.

    Dave,

A Galaxy J2 does not come with 8 GB ram (random access memory, or "phone memory").
It come with 1 GB ram and 8 GB storage.
Yes you can add an SD card to increase the storage, but that will not help at all with the number of apps that you can load (have running) at one time, because all running apps need to be loaded in the 1 GB ram memory.
You may want to read this article for some tips: How to increase the RAM of your Android smartphone - AndroidPIT

Edit: Oops, a J2 prime comes with 1.5 GB ram, so not 1 GB, but it doesn't make all that much difference.

8 GB is not much storage when the Android OS takes around the half storage for itself. And then some storage is reserved. Probably you can only install apps up to 2 GB together on that phone which is quite less.

I think using the flash memory that is in memory cards to substitute the RAM in the the cellphone isn't going to work to well. The performance profile is significantly different.
Guide to smartphone hardware (3/7): Memory and Storage
Relative Speeds from RAM to Flash to Disk

The option suggested by the article Dutchie posted (optimize your use of RAM) is probably a better path forward. From a computer standpoint, what really slows a system down is when it has to page out from RAM memory to slower media due to memory pressure.

Just like with computer Operating systems, the Android operating system is getting bigger with each release. That's why most phones now have 3-4 GB of RAM.

Android 7 uses about 1.5 GB RAM and around 4 GB storage plus the amount of storage of the included programs.

Try Cyanogen ROMs for your phone. But installing this requires intense knowledge or a good tutorial oranual.

A: Yes it can be done.
B: I can. Send it on over to Afghanistan and I'll try to get it back to you around Christmas.

Nah, you just have to be capable of following step by step instructions. Most tutorials are idiot proof giving a TON of warnings on what NOT to do.

Thanks for all the answers. In particular:

Thanks, but I do know that rooting the phone will void the warranty so I wonder if a legit phone store would do it. Plus if its done wrong the phone is destroyed. I think I need a geek :o o:

Yes, I misspelled when I said Ram but the problem is the 8 GB of ROM which is full already after only 3 days of use and this particular phone does not easily use the added SD card for aps.

Having Googled and found "CyanogenMod (CM) is a discontinued popular open-source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers, based on the Android mobile platform." I decided to give that a pass but thanks for the suggestion.

@Wrye83 Since you cannot do it until Christmas  can you direct me to a foolproof tutorial to root my Samsung Galaxy J2 Prime with this intent:

    I will stop you there and say;
I bought two Samsung Galaxy Phones and a Samsung Galaxy Tablet along with a Samsung Flat Screen TV. ALL have proven to be very frustrating to say the least! I assumed I was buying a quality Brand Name, I am sure I assumed wrong. Next time I plan to do much more research before I buy and NO it will NOT be a Samsung product... :banghead:
