Having passed by Conrad’s Diner many times I decided to give it a try. The architecture, construction and interior design is flawless and it’s obvious no expense had been spared in the setup of this pristine establishment in Pulan Tubig, Dumaguete. At the time and duration of my visit I was the only visitor and upon entering the lights and aircon were activated. Choosing a table by the window I browsed the wide range of the menu before settling on the Chicken Breast Supreme with Basil Cream Sauce (P189) and a Pilsen Beer (P35). While I absorbed my surroundings and the atmosphere when I noticed the high level time and effort spent in setting up the establishment. It reminded me of many busy bars and bistros in England, with quality furniture, a well stocked over-bar glass-rack and diner style alcove seating interspersed with round high tables and high chairs. A very nice ceiling fan aided the twin air conditioners in the high ceiling venue and the staff were friendly and attentive.
Within 10 minutes my meal arrived and although it looked a bit bleak, the first bite confirmed I had come at a bad time. It was neither breast, as advertised and I suspect it was not chicken either, maybe duck. That optional knife wouldn’t have helped here either, it was mainly cartilage and some kind of oily meat. While the basil cream sauce was just plain pesto, it did taste delicious, but then again I really like pesto. Accompanied with some nicely garnished but very cold rice, warm sweet corn, runner beans and two strips of uncooked carrot I have to say I was not impressed however just before I left, who I suspect to be the chef returned and I considered getting something else.
If my experience has been shared by others I can fully understand why the place was completely empty, why the lights and aircon were switched off and why they hadn’t paid the extra P40/kg for chicken breast. However, personally I think I arrived when the chef was out and the remaining staff did the best they could with the ingredients available and as such I will be making another visit to confirm or condemn this review as any single visit, no matter how bad is not enough to draw a conclusion. For that matter I implore anyone else with either a good or bad experience to list it in the comments below.
