Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria or COSCA is compared to a phoenix, which literally grew from the ashes. The forerunners of Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria are burned down to ashes twice but in spite of the events, the school still continues to grow and prosper and is now one of the higher education institution in Dumaguete.
The first fire happened in December of 1953 that burned down Dumaguete’s commercial district including the church and the forerunner school of Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria. From the ashes, a small school was rebuilt together with the aid of Catholic community volunteers. The school was known as The Little Flower Clinic.
The Little Flower Clinic has grown into a Parochial School and with the addition of the department for high school students, it became a Cathedral School. When the degree programs for college students were added, the school became the Dumaguete Cathedral College.
Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria experienced its second fire incident on April of 1983 when it was still the Dumaguete Cathedral College. The buildings that were used for elementary and high school students were destroyed but the school was still able to rise from the ashes.
The name Dumaguete Cathedral College was changed into Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria as a symbol of the second new beginning and prosperous times in the future for the school. The name Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria is the name of the patron saint of Dumaguete.
Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria is firmly committed to provide quality education to the people of Dumaguete in an inexpensive manner. Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria is located within the business district of Dumaguete but within the school campus, students experience the quiet and tranquil atmosphere suitable for learning.
Today, Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria offers elementary and high school education, which is put under the management of the Basic Education Department. For degree programs, Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria offers many college courses under the following departments: Computer Science and Information Systems, Allied Health Sciences, College of Criminology, College of Business, and Liberal Arts and Education.
Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria is an active participant in the community of Dumaguete. The resources of Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria are shared willingly with other schools and the entire community. Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria has outreach programs that helps people especially in the areas of Dumaguete that are economically depressed.
