The city of Iloilo is one of the many perfect destinations in the Philippines. Iloilo is a tiny island located in the Western Visayas region. It has a rich culture and a noteworthy history on the humble beginning of this place. Iloilo comes from the word Irong-Irong, which means a tongue of land that sticks out like a nose on the south of Iloilo River. It has been told in the Maragtas legend that Iloilo way back in the 13th century, Datu Puti landed at the mouth of the Swaragan River, currently and presently known as the town of San Joaquin. It dates back to the Spanish period of colonization, starting out as a small grouping of fishermen’s hamlets from the Iloilo River. The language they speak is Hiligaynon or Ilonggo. Ilonggos are happy yet simple people. Most of their people are Catholics but old pagan traditions are sometimes applied in their culture. Old folks believe on tamawo, encanto or fairies. They are environmental sipirits which Ilonggos believed in a long time ago.
