It has been more than 100 years now since the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres founded the premier Catholic institution in the Philippines, Saint Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD). Last year, SPUD celebrated its 110th Foundation Anniversary with the theme, “Alive and Ablaze in God’s Light” held last October 25-29, 2014 at the SPUD grounds. Faculty, staff, alumni and students of SPUD were gathered to celebrate the said university’s foundation anniversary. The celebration was done in honor of Father Louis Chauvet, the founder, and the seven sisters who arrived in the shore of Dumaguete on the 29th day of October in the year 1904 to spread the words of God and the language from their hearts, “Caritas Christi Urget Nos”. The said celebration was made possible by the leadership of the College of Arts and Education (CAED) family headed by the CAED dean, Dr. Enriqueta Cimafranca.
The celebration began with a wreath-laying ceremony participated by student representatives held at the SPUD Marker, Rizal Boulevard. A motorcade followed after the activity. Later that day, the official opening of booths of the different departments took place. The said booths showcased the landmarks of the different countries where St. Paul Schools, Colleges, Universities and Hospitals were located. The Grand Alumni Homecoming and Power 91 Live Radio Party were exclusively participated by Paulinian Alumni. The Night of Sound and Music happened to be in the same evening showcasing the vocal talents of Paulinians.

On the 26th, the different collegiate activities were held. Some of the competitions include the inter-departmental Mural Painting Contest, Best Art & Photo Exhibit, Bible Quiz, Math & Science Quiz, and invitational sports games. In the afternoon of the same day, the SPUD Grand Parade highlighted the street dance showcasing the students (representing their respective countries) in their tribal and national costumes. At 7:00 pm, the most awaited concert of Sam Conception, one of the finest performers of ABS-CBN, took place in the Father Louis Chauvet Hall (FLCH), SPUD gymnasium. The said concert was open for all Paulinians and outsiders with the general admission of Php 200.00. On the third day of the celebration, SPUD conducted a medical mission and mangrove planting in line with university’s advocacies. Pinoy Olympics and invitational games were held at the SPUD ball field. After the games, a choral singing competition was done at the FLCH participated by selected students of the different college departments and basic education levels. CAED was hailed the champion of the said competition. At 6:00 pm, Battle of the Bands and Students’ Night entertained the guests and students of SPUD.

October 28, 2014 happened to be the Employees’ Night. All SPUD employees including the SPC sisters and school administrators, faculty and staff and maintenance personnels took over the stage to surprise the students with their song and dance numbers. Pinoy Olympics, invitational games and British Parliamentary debate were done earlier that day. On the last day of the celebration, an inter-departmental mass demonstration was held at the SPUD ballfield performing the national dances of the different countries assigned. The list of performers and thier assigned country are as follows: Primary and Elementary Levels, Philippines; 1st Year College, Malaysia; Intermediate Level, Korea; 2nd Year College, China; and, High School Level, Korea. At three in the afternoon, a talent explosion was held at Robinson’s Place in showcasing the Paulinian talents.
The 110th founder’s day wouldn’t be successful without the efforts of the SPC sisters, school administrators, faculty & staff from the Basic Education to College departments, the leadership of the College of Arts and Education and the active participation of everyone.
