I just watched, for the second time, the Reel Time documentary called, "Expats Living Rough in the Philippines". Those dudes were living rough for sure. Some of the reasons were bad luck but most were bad choices. Whether its mental illness, substance abuse or just p*ss poor planning (you pick) I hate to see a foreigner in that situation because it makes the rest of look bad. Has any of you seen the 5 part videos on YouTube? The quality of the videos are pretty poor but the content is good. Do any of you know the 4 expats showcased? Are there any expats you see around living on the street?

In a bad situation like those expats living rough, I would have to contact some reliable people to get me the heck out, where I had some earning potential to pay them back, support my family if any and get my financial house in order.

Could be worse, Ellen Degenerate or that WEIRD Gay Night time Host that looks like he had sucked on a lemon before the show started... He CREEPS me out!

    Altho I do like the Australian version of Dear Abby we had here yonks ago that had all sorts of funny Dear Abby Questions and Answers, similar to;

    Dear Abby,

My husband is a liar and a cheat. He has cheated on me from the beginning, and when I confront him, he denies everything. What's worse, everyone knows he cheats on me. It is so humiliating. Also, since he lost his job four years ago he hasn't even looked for a new one. All he does is buy cigars and cruise around and bull shi7 with his pals, while I have to work to pay the bills. Since our daughter went away to college he doesn't even pretend to like me and hints that I am a lesbian. What should I do?

    Signed, Clueless

    Dear Clueless:

Grow up and dump him. For Pete's sake, you don't need him anymore. You're a United States Senator from New York, act like it!

Annnnd yet another one doing the rounds... :indifferent:
WHY do so many (mainly Filipina) garner such great sympathy for these guys and automatically assume that the "Poor Foreigner was done over by a cheating Wife"

As I explained to asawa (every time) we do not know the reasons WHY, but I fail to see WHY many end up as Beggars when they are capable of asking for help via other means...

The plan B should be to build a network of friends and contacts here. I swear I could live here on $200 / month if I were single. I could probably make $200 / month through Mechanical Turk. Anyone could log into Mechanical Turk and start making money from day one.

All I would need is an internet connection, cheap cell phone, backpack and a small portable keyboard. A mouse would be helpful as well. Make sure to get a cell phone which supports these peripherals. I might not even need the accessories, but they would be better for writing.

Between friends and friendly service establishments (restaurants, etc) I always have multiple wifi connections available to work from. If I didn't have a computer or cell phone, then many of these people would probably also allow me to use their computer while I get back on my feet.

If I were totally screwed and I needed something TODAY, then I would just hit the pavement and talk to foreigners about helping them out with small things in return for food (will work for food!) There are a ton of foreign owned businesses here where another foreigner could be very helpful. I know I could couch surf for a while here as I build up the above structure and save up enough money to rent a room. A room would be super cheap and obviously way better than living on the street.

The above would get me food and shelter without having to ask anyone for a handout. While some foreigners would agree to provide food in return for work out of pity, other foreigners would get value out of the arrangement. If I'm receiving payment in exchange for providing a valuable service, then that's a profitable business. At this point I'm already doing better than many business owners by grinding out a small profit.

Now that I have my food and shelter, I can use my off-time to increase the return on my labor and bring in more cash. If I'm working mostly for food, then just about anything I could find would be an improvement. Just being able to speak and write English decently well is probably worth at least $5 / hour. If I'm living on $200 / month, then $5 / hour can be a game changer over time as long as I'm not wasting money and saving all that I can.

None of this would be easy. It would be a grind and would require grit, hustle, determination, focus, discipline and a bunch of other traits which many people don't have. It's possible though.

I agree with a comment in the link you provided.

Regardless of the reason, someone should help him out. The large majority of homeless people suffer from some level of mental illness. Someone should help him to his embassy or contact his family. (There is no reason a Philippine Immigration officer couldn't do this.)
