just had an interesting conversation with a friend who had family leaving from Dumaguete to manila today, got to airport to hear sorry sir brownout so no checkin, apparently no generator at airport or not working but this was not the worst. The next thing sorry sir no flights today 20 mins before boarding! There are so many people waiting for flights there as there have been no flights out of here since day before tropical cyclone queenie. They were told to come back on dec 5th! It's a clear day today so what's going on with these airlines here and it also looks like they have lost their money as they needed to be in manila to check in.
My daughter had a similar problem with the last storm at the beginning of October. No electronic/radar equip to allow landings through the clouds. The restaurant across from airport that works on motorcycles, owner has better weather/information systems than the airport had. It took about 4 days, and 10 continuous hours of effort to get the new tickets and her on a flight. It also cost her over 20,000 P extra. Lesson: Do not plan to get out of Dumaguete by plane in a timely manner to connect with Manila if there are any storms present. Flying out of Cebu by taking a bus to Cebu, staying over night, may be a better alternative. Too bad we do not have an international airport here so it would eliminate the NAIA as being the worst in that Category in the world. .
And yes dave I think they were quoted around p8000 pp for flights to manila at the moment, Christmas is coming so they charge what they want!
As with a most Modes of Transport, when we get a run on cancellations, The Rolling Stack ( So to Speak) ends up in the Wrong Place. So we all have to sit back and wait for the Programmers to get the Stock back into it's Proper Routine. This can take some days even Weeks at it's worst. I know, it is not what people want to hear but, they just can't Magic up Aircraft to come and deal with a backlog of Passengers. Most Domestic Airports will be Suffering the same Situation I am Sure. When I was doing the European Trips, I always took Azon to Manila for a couple of days. Saved all the headaches. If Flights got cancelled it gave me a little time to rearrange. Of course all this is Hindsight for the OP's Friends family. I do hope things work out and not too much Money is lost. Of course there should be recourse on this But............. JP
I think the safe way to get to Manila if you have a connecting flight that is time sensitive is to transport (bus or boat) to Cebu and then fly to Manila. I believe Cebu is a much better all weather airport than Dumaguete.
Yes I think they do but if the weather is bad all ferries are also cancelled. As soon as they raise signal no 1 that's it were stuck here.
They did, I don't know if they do anymore though. A horrible way to get to Manila. If you go the ferry route make sure to pay for the first class private room or you will have spoiled little brats running around all day and night making all kinds of noise. It's a freaking zoo! (literally, there are freaking tons of roosters being transported by ferry.)
BTW: they had better get their act together at the airport. I have a flight to Dubai next week (before the 5th). It will cost them and me a lot of money if it gets canceled.
We have a tenant also flying to the uk on tue next week, not broken the news to him yet. I suggest anyone who has a flight out of here over the next week gets up to Cebu or manila any way possible as soon as possible, looking at the weather radar there maybe more cancelations on the way.
