I have a neighbour who has 3 nieces staying with her from the Deep Province, 2 of them obtained jobs in Dumaguete, 1 at Lee Plaza and 1 at Cangs, Both have since lost the jobs. Reason; Time keeping.
Now this is something I think we all have at some time said is quite a strange thing, the Filipino Time factor. Whether it be punctuality or time management, These two young ladies have learned the hard way that Business Owners and many things in the modern World run on time as most of us have and I know for me, still try to do.

I sympathies with these young ladies but as i said to elder of the two, You want the good things in life, but they all come with a price and getting to work each day on time and returning from breaks on time are just 2 of them.

Also bear in mind that now you are now marked as a bad timekeeper, this is not good when applying for other jobs and a reference is required. Is it not Strange that people will only learn when it hurts their pockets.
A little too late for these two but I hope the rest of the family will learn from this as they have just lost 2 earners.

I have always said, that it is the bad timekeepers that always moan the loudest when the Plane is late.

It's not just the Philippines. It is a regular battle I have with the Afghans. It is not unusual for them to show up not just hours late....but days late. When they show up late to a scheduled appointment I send them packing back to their province (usually more than a 7 hour drive) and they can answer to their commander. I'm not unreasonable, if they had a flat tire, had vehicle problems or were attacked I'm more than happy to come late....but they regularly admit to just oversleeping or forgetting about the appointment. These guys will be screwed when the US/Coalition leaves. They are completely unable to manage anything by themselves. But what really ticks me off is when I set a time with them and they actually show up early and then ring me saying they have been waiting 10 minutes on me and are upset about not showing up early to an appointment. It's a completely selfish and childish mentality.

I couldn't imagine running a business in a country that uses this flexible time keeping. HR must have their hands full at all times.

In the world of makers, we have this term called "busywork." Busywork is doing easy things which make you feel like you are getting work done, but doesn't move to needle on the things which are important for the bottom line. It's a form of procrastination when faced with things which are cognitively or creatively demanding.

For solo entrepreneurs and small teams, busywork is a killer because it eats up scarce resources and becomes a drag on productivity. In big corp, organizational bloat removes employees so far from the bottom line that some may feel that their busywork is their entire job description. When big corp "restructures" and sheds thousands of workers, it's getting rid of "busyworkers."

Giving managers, handlers and gatekeepers in the Philippines a list of rules is like handing them a feast of busywork. We can't get customer service, but we can get someone from the ages of 23 to 27, female, over the height of 63 inches and who has worked at the job for less than 6 months. Managers can't show people how to sell something, but why bother when they have a long list of rules they need to be enforcing. Enforcing rules is much easier than making sales.

Filipino time never existed in big corp where stupid rules trump everything. Showing up on time isn't a bullshit rule, maybe just a bullshit job. [1] Until I can walk into a store here and not be frustrated, I'm not convinced that no tolerance on being late is a sign of good management.

[1] I'm grateful that if I need to know the time of day, I need nothing more accurate than a glance at the sun and the stars. I don't wake up at the screaming of an alarm and I set my own schedule. Having to be somewhere at a specific time is irritating. Deliver results and the rest of the details take care of themselves. Let robots do the work of robots.

    so
I hazard a guess then that you would not moan about a late Plane departure and missing your international Flight. cos you are in your busy time.
It's OK we can Start the war tomorrow, Today I am not ready

Sure, my post was a bit idealist. The main point was that I'm not impressed with late workers getting fired when so much other stuff is still jacked up. It's easy to fire someone for coming in late. It's not so easy to provide good customer service.

Maybe but the guy that Fixes them, Flies or Operates them is not and if he feels like being late ...........
Your local bar opens at 11.30 when he opens normally at 11, the first thing any of us say is OH! You are late opening today!

Get my point. To ME Time is time. People that tell me that they don't bother about time need to think, I hope I do not need surgery or something where Time is so very important.

For me it is over as I Am not about to cross swords with you or anyone that can only think about what they do with their time and sod all others and this is what the thread was about. The contract stated you will start at whatever time and they did not, so out you go. Tell me anywhere, or anyone who is Employed in the service industry, that is not geared to time.

Dude, I normally agree with you on things but on this one i can't.

On this we will just have to agree to disagree

Well I would say that it is impossible to provide good customer service with late arriving staff , because they are not there to serve , so by getting rid of those that arrive late you are already on your way to improving customer service , if arriving late for work without a legitimate reason becomes a pattern , and the position can be filled by a reliable replacement it is a no brainer , any company is only as good as it's worst employee.
