I have some Mirai sweet corn seeds purchased from a reputable seed company from the US. I grew it that last 3 years I was in Korea, both in containers and in a garden. I have planted 100 seeds (25 at a time) and have had 3 come up and then die. 25 of the seeds were gotten by the neighbors chickens, 75 seeds and nothing. I am at a loss and Google has not given me any ideas.

I did buy some sweet corn seeds in town and planted a few today to see if that could be the issue, but this one really has me at a loss...any advice would be appreciated (and yes, I have always started corn in a tray and transplanted).

The most successful garden Ive ever seen planted here in Bacong is the second most one Ive seen in the Philippines. The first one was by the farmers association in Bacolod that was used to show people how veggies grow.that was a raised bed.. Here they dug trenches about 20-24 inch deep and piled up the dirt between the trenches..so thats a raised bed.. Rot is what I lost most of my 6 attempts of plants- plots of always at least eight rows 12 foot long ...but loses also to rats climbing and eating ripe ears..and theft by climbing a 10ft fence

Im of the opinion that you should probably go the added pain in the butt of planting starter cups...for everything ..even field crops like corn..wheat..barley if you were interested in it.remember even rice gets started and transplanted

The sweet corn seeds we picked up locally seem to be germinating well, they just popped up this morning so I will see how they do. I don't want to give up on the Mirai seeds as that sweet corn is the best I've tasted. I have a couple ideas to try the seeds again (I bought 200 seeds so I can experiment).

I started some more corn (both Mirai and the local seeds from before) in seed trays...saw a sprout and then nothing. It has been over 2 weeks so I decided to check what happened, I could not find a single kernel of corn that I planted. I started the seeds in the "pump room", so it is closed off; not to say a rat could not have gotten in but I should have seen some signs of digging.

I moved the trays outside (to my garden area) when other things popped up so they could get some sun and get used to the winds. Long story short, I started some more corn seeds yesterday that I picked up from Do It Best...if they do not germinate I think I will lose my mind. I have never had a problem with corn in my life until I came here.

Cherry thinks I'm a bit odd to start seeds in trays, especially corn. Her family grows a bit of corn but it is more like the field corn I'm familiar with and not sweet corn. They use it for "corn rice" or what I think is pretty much grits, just cooked a bit different. I've eaten field corn back in my Iowa days and it is OK but is grown for animal feed, it is not sweet corn.

I also had problems with rats once I had things in the last garden, think I got the ones trying to stay here (without poison as I worried about the pups). I have also been keeping the dogs outside at night as they are great at killing rats (my niece said they got one yesterday). Rats can by-pass the yard and dogs to get to the garden so I will have some traps set again once I get things planted.

    Any advice on sweet corn?

Jack...I had to go to my friend Google to figure out what a "Dibber" was; I've never seen one in the US (or elsewhere) that I've noticed. Cool looking tool that makes sense. I'd actually like to get my hands on one, probably easier to make one than try to acquire one.

The sweet corn seeds I picked up have sprouted with about 90% and are just about 4" tall right now. Hopefully these work out, now I'm wondering if the other seeds were just a bit old.
