Being in a business that has contact with a lot of people coming to start living around the Dumaguete area, I am being asked by quite a few what it is like to live in the various towns around the City. As I personally have not lived in most of them, I cannot answer those questions from any degree of experience. I do notice that back in 2008 there were some discussions but figure that 7 years later there might have been some changes.
I would love to hear some first hand experiences to pass on .

specifically interested in Bacong, Dauin , Zambanguita, Valencia and Sibulan.

    Your help would be appreciated.

    Gord

Really depends what you're looking for in terms of housing, internet and how much you like the city!
Bacong is ok but there can be water issues depending where you are, Internet is ok here most of the time as adsl runs up until here. Further south its on wireless.
The market here is a dump and stinks but fresh fish tables down the road are ok with some good stuff. Also beaches here are not much good, you need Dauin for the better beaches.
If we moved from here it would be valencia even though there can also be water issues up there also when it rains.

I agree with Davy. I also live in Bacong because it is close to town, but far enough out where the air is fresher, less noise, and cheaper lots. Nothing like a U.S. suburb, to be sure, but the fresh daily fish and farmers market are other advantages. Not many pubs around except one can go to Bambulo or La Fiesta and one convenience store. Still, 10 min. to the mall or 10 min. to Dauin resorts help make it acceptable. I recommend it.

You should also take into consideration the proximity of the wife's family.

only the rich people live in the mountains...i am a poor man, so i have to live at the ocean in bacong, house with sea view, fresh cool breeze all day n night, nearly mosquito free, no videoke in the neighbourhood, sand beach in front of my door...surely not recommended for everyone

We live about 2km ''úp the hill'' from Valencia. There can be water problems if there's a big rain, but we haven't had a problem in the last 3 years. The market is good for veggies - also a good Sunday market. It's a very pleasant little town - only thing lacking I think is a good ''expat'' bar, but it's not too far too Bambulo or La Fiesta.
The electric rebate is discontinued now, but the evenings are much cooler than down on the coast so we hardly ever use ac - a big saving given the cost of electricity here.
San Pedro private school in Valencia teaches in English.
Also, we have never had any security issues here.
