More people moving to Dumaguete?

    I recently heard from a friend and former Dumaguete resident (Bacong) that "more people are coming here."
    Just wanted to confirm, are more people moving there? Is it happenng in droves? Finally, what are some of the reasons? For example, I have heard many Chinese are coming due to some restrictions in China or costs, etc.

    Jimf, not sure about the Chinese coming hee, but I think it is safe to say foreigners move here because:
    1. Cheaper overall cost of living for retirement
    2. Good year round weather
    3. Attractive young ladies
    4. Pretty good diving
    5. Most locals understand English
    6. If you find you don't like it here, you can hop over to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia

    Hello Pat its been some time since we interacted here...nice to hear from you.
    I see. Seems like all the same good reasons to move to Negros or the Dumaguete area still exist. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some sudden, remarkable influx or change of conditions causing more people to come.
    Since joining here and expressing a genuine desire to move there I still haven't done it. I could actually retire now and do just fine, but not pulling the trigger for one reason or another.
    Thats the trap I guess...
    I'm workin on it!

    I see more tourists in their 20's and 30's mostly European and new residents seem to be older single men from Canada, Australia and U.S. My guess is more moving here for affordability in retirement.

    It is an easy life here, once you get past adjusting to a different culture. Being that English is the common language here it makes life much more easy to evolve and blend in.. although you never truly blend in... although you may bend in as you are most like taller than 98% of the natives. It is also a Christian-based culture unlike most of the other Asian cultures around, but you would not recognize many aspects of the Christian culture if you are from the States.

    Thanks for that input Dave.
    I know I will enjoy it and think about moving there often. I've been to Negros 4 or 5 times now. Not too much bending for me at 5'8" I'm not any taller than Filipino men lol.
    I'm ready for the change and for me the difference in culture is interesting. I think the people are very warm in general and the islands have a lot of beauty, I love the water, etc.

    The bulk of the Baby Boomers have already started retiring and will continue to do so for the next decade or so. I suspect the expat community will continue to grow for several years then taper off after that generation has gone. Child per family has been steadily going down in the West and dept per person has gone up because of it. I don't believe that is true for Asia so I would expect that well off Asian countries will eventually take over as the most commonly seen expat in the Philippines. Change is so slow to happen in the Philippines and I don't see them becoming a first world country anytime soon so they will continue to be a retirement option for the middle class of first world countries. Just my 2 cents.

    Sounds like a fair assessment Wrye I would agree.
    I may have taken it for granted that, "the most commonly seen expat in the Philippines" is a Westerner when it is actually an Asian.
