Interestingly, many of the country’s wealthiest people are self-made (including the richest man in the Philippines, Henry Sy). So if you’re determined enough and have the right business savvy, you might just find yourself on this list in the future. Sy of SM Investments Corporation consolidates his status as the richest person in the Philippines for the seventh year in a row, his net worth increasing by 10 digits due to the growth of the largest Philippine retailer. Sy is also now the 73rd richest person in the world. John Gokongwei climbs to second place on the back of the strong revenue growth of JG Summit Holdings Inc. Well done to them, and a good interesting article, thanks for posting. Is there any information of exactly where these guys made their wealth ? Was it all accumulated in Phil, or only in part, with the majority of it in say Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, etc., etc.,
If I remember correctly Sy started off opening a small shoe store (Shoe Mart) and then turned that into the monster retail and property giant it is now. I believe that the majority of his wealth came from the Philippines through SM, though I would bet that, with him being a smart man, he hasn't limited his later investments to only the Philippines.
